24 valve truck
24 valve truck
I am going to buy a different truck. However this time I am going to buy a truck that is what I wont. I need to find out which truck or model to buy. I wont four wheel disc brakes, a 6 speed, quad cab and 3.54 gears. I dont know about the differences between HO and Standard out put engines. I wont good mileage. 20 or better. I dont wont a engine that has dowl pin or poor block casting problems. If I can have Marco reflash the ecm and buy a good set of injectors that is all I will need. If the mileage is not there then a piers camshaft and a 16 mm exhaust housing. I have been told that if I install a RASP or what ever it is that could solve the pump problems.. I just need good insight an information on which truck to buy. I dont wont to race or drag sleds. So I wont need a automatic to snow plow..
What year is the best to buy or engine package? Thanks for any information Jim

2001.5 is the first with 4 wheel disc's.
6speed only came with the HO's.
So, either a late model 2001 or 2002 non-California are your only choices.
Neither year will have the KDP or the "53" block.
Either are easily "Marco'd" from what I've read.

well, as far as fuel mileage, buy a toyota echo. Seriously, you are buying a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, be happy with what you get.
Mileages were consistently higher, in my experience, with the 12 valve trucks. The 24 valve units are all over the mileage map.
On the other hand, you are looking at 01 or newer, to get 4 discs, a six speed, and an HO all in one package. These are good trucks
I am running the 5 speed, with the HO, 3.54's, quad cab, long bed,4 wheel disc brake, 4x4. This is not an available option, unless there is some other guru out there, like the one who factory ordered my truck, then never picked it up.....
I have seen 01 - 02 trucks nail down better than 20mpg, mine does it daily. but, I have also seen them get as low as 6mpg empty. not too cool.
Good luck with finding what you want.

Phox is right....As Usual!
jimk - as a general rule...lot to be said for the lattest year in any given model. Better chance of any design bugs being worked out. Believe this is true with the 02's. Should be able to find one under 100,000 miles for added protection of some warranty left.
I would suggest the less temperamental SO engine...unless the 6 speed is a must. No hard evidence for saying this...just my gut feeling.

The HO being temperamental is just a thought that popped into my head while answering you question. I don't have an HO...so don't pay real close attention...but seems to me, of the very few CTD's that have had serious engine failure, most were HO's, while towing fairly heavy, with mild HP add-ons. The two I have seen were on level ground and only running 1150-1200* EGT's.
I'll let other HO owners chime in with whether or not I off base here. Somewhere along the way, I just developed a feeling that the higher compression HO's need closer watching.
Anybody Else?

My '02 has been great. The HOs not only have slightly higher compression (17:1 vs 16.4:1), but they have a smaller capacity, higher injection pressure pump. Thus, it injects more fuel in less time. It also can't inject as much fuel-- it has less total capacity. So the HO pumps have less reserve capacity out of the box. A wire tap box that gives 120hp on a SO will only give 90hp on a HO. While a So truck can give enough fuel for 700hp, an HO runs out of fuel at about 525.
I believe strongly that an HO truck can perform very well in heavy towing applications. BUT DO NOT INCREASE THE TIMING! A box like the Edge EZ is IMHO a time bomb on an HO truck that's consistently loaded to max CVWR or more.
If you tow very light or not at all, then the extra timing is fine-- you won't hurt anything.
But if you're going to load up the truck and REALLY work it, do NOT advance timing with a box. Stick with a fueling-only box from TST or Blue Chip.
For an HO that's towing heavy, run mild injectors (Mach 1 or 1.5) and a fueling-only box.
I agree that the few CTD failures I have seen have been HOs. But they have all been modded as well. Timing on the HO does NOT cooperate with heavy loads. Think of the stakes:
1) if timing is too little, then you give up a little bit of power and mileage
2) if timing is too much, your engine can melt with EGTs of only 1000-1100°.
The upshot to the higher compression of the HOs is that they can give better mileage (at least on paper). I routinely get 17 around town and 21 on the hwy.
IMHO, the 01.5 and 02 HO trucks are the best of the 2nd gen 24V breed.

Great detailed explanation of what I was trying to get at!
And, since the original criteria was 4 Wheel Disk Brakes...you statement of... "All HOs are 6-speeds, but not all 6-speeds are HOs"...does not apply... and Phox was 100% right!!!
No offense...just couldn't resist!
jimk - Good luck!

2002 truck
Justin Thanks for the information. I wont a truck that can give me good mileage first of all. When I tow I dont hot rod or stand on the throttle. I for sure dont lug the engine, allways watch the EGTs . I would like to have enough power to pull a load about 65 or so. 375 hp or a little more and just enjoy the ride
I have a idea on what I need but I have read where Marco has done good things to the 24 valve computor. Can the HO be made to respond better by that approach or should I use a Fuel Box only. I dont pull with the truck 100 % of the time, is there a box that can turn off the timing and just use fuel. Is the best way to use a good set of injectors ? who I have no idea, and a box that can be turned off when towing?
Does the HO have the same pump problems? Justin and Many others also, thanks for you help Jimk

Ho or standard output
