2001 2500 Quad cab Cummins Diesel 5.9L Bad Temperature Gauge ?

I replaced my engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor last night because my temperature gauge on the dashboard instrument panel was stuck on 140 F. Well - it's still stuck today, so I guess the ECT sensor wasn't the problem - anyone had a similar issue? I guess it's "dealer time"

Thanks - Rob

First thing would be to compare a scan tool reading to the gauge reading. CTS input is for the ECM. That data is trasfered on the bus to the cluster module where it determines a gauge reading. Key off, hold down your trip button, turn key on while still holding the trip button down. It should go into a self test and perform a gauge sweep. This will at least show if the cluster is even capable of moving the temp gauge indicator.

thanks for the reply

I'll give that a try after the sun comes up here (near Knoxville, TN). I was thinking that I may have a thermostat stuck in the open position...thoughts?

The truck seems to be running normally...

The blind assumption was that the needle wasn't moving, but you didn't list where you lived so if it's really cold where you are, that may be a possibility, but you would also be complaining of poor/no cab heat. Even if the tstat is stuck open, you should be able to raise the idle (1500 rpm) and leave it running and still get the heat to come up. I just r/r my Tstat. Even noticed as far back as June when pulling the trailer the temp seemed higher than normal (115 degrees out). Took until this month when coasting down one of the mountain passes (cool out now) that the temp would drop to the peg. New t-stat made everything good.

got it

I just swapped out the T-stat, problem fixed. The gauge sweep test checked out OK this morning, and the cab has been alittle cold lately... The old T-stat was shot, it was mashed together when I pulled in out of the housing...

Thanks for the help - Rob
