100,000 miles, start to give me problems starting. thought it was batterys at first, nope- thought cables, nope-- after reading several post I checked the starter contacts, yep!!!! definitely was worn..

the thing is-- I can get a "NEW",, "NO CORE" starter for $113 plus tax, OR I see Solenoid kits at "LarryB's" web site $38.95 plus shipping.

question is---why all the recomendations for the kit that contains contacts and plunger?????? this is a new starter at a Cummins auth. dealer. 1 yr warrenty

If it is just a few dollars more I would just get the whole starter, alot easier to swap the part than to rebuild the starter IMO.

 

I ordered the Larry B contacts AFTER I installed new contacts from a local Electrical shop (rebuilds alt/starters) I bought them locally for 6$ for the pair, took 10mins to replace them, your getting a starter for a smoking deal, I have not confirmed it but was told they are 700+ here in edmonton at the dodge dealer

 

I like Larry B's contacts because they are much beefier than the OEM's. You're still saving a good $70 by getting just the contacts and the plunger.

Most of time do not need the plunger IMHO. Beefier contacts do job. Make sure contacts installed square and wiring not shorted during reassembly. Never saw a decent rebuild (new) for that low of price???????

 

Check locally for a shop that rebuilds starters. When mine needed worked on I went to the place that rebuilds all the starters for our tractors. Didn't even say a word to the guy when i walked in and He told me to wait 5 mins and came back with the new contacts in place cost me 15 bucks(works great) and told me he would not be in bus. if they made them like they used too.lol

 

because typically folks replace the starter when all that ever goes is the contacts, BTW 113$ for a starter is a steal, heck I'd buy it even if I'did not need it

My truck has 400,500kms (250,000miles) on the orginal starter, I just replaced the starter contacts last month, and have a set of larry B's in the tool box, edventually I'll replace 'em

 

$113 for a starter is really cheap. I paid $150 for mine and that was after NAPA matched the price I was quoted from a local wrecking yard that sells inexpensive foreign remanufactured stuff. Mine had a lifetime warranty and I was more than happy to get the deal I got. If you can get one for $113 and it has a warranty then I say go for it.

 

I agree for $113 I would get the starter. I couldn't find one near that cheap when mine gave me problems.

I will say that the most difficult part of replacing the plunger and contacts is removing and replacing the starter, so it's really not much more work.
