02 24 valve cummins engine knock.

Let me start by saying I am new to this board and I greatly appreciate any help I can get on this situation. I have an 02 24 valve it is all stock it has a brand new injection pump and lift pump as well as injectors but for some reason there is a knocking sound in the engine I've checked the clutch and all its components the rods and mains the truck runs great no smoke and it runs smooth but this knock is driving me crazy at this point I don't know where else to look I am going to see if by some chance I got The timing off by one tooth when replacing the pump but that seems like a long shot. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Not sure if it would run if the IP timing was off...

Could be minor like a valve spring adjustment or major like a rod end.

How about doing an oil analysis?

I have checked all of it even changed tho oil rod ends and bearings as well as main bearings are good. I'm at a loss. I also wonder about an issue in the injector pump it didn't start this till after the new pump was installed.

My vp is the cause of most underhood noise and really clatters at shutdown sometimes. If the vp is all you touched since this started, I'd look there first...

Injection timing can cause some knocking. Did you use the correct key for your new injection pump or re-use the old key?

I always use the key that is with the pump and has the same number as the pump arrow pointing right and all. I am also thinking that the pump has to be the culprit

Been down this road before.

I also had a knock, and did extensive research to find the cause. Right to ripping the head off. Guess what, it was the pump. Only found out after that one went west with chicken George. Put the new pump on, no more knock. Don't stress about it, stay calm, be brave, wait for the signs...

A rod knock will happen on deceleration, a wrist pin more pronounced when cold, and mains can be felt in your feet.

This one is a ghost, and causes no measurable issues other than elevated blood pressure.

Gee, I thought that was common knowledge. I'm either showing my age, or others are showing theirs...

Crazy fact, I still own 1 fe, 352. And work on hotrod 390 and 428 once in a while. 391 as well, dump truck engine...

Funny as it would seem, I have never worked on an fe 360.

Also have a 292 y block in a 63 pickup.

I thought I was the only FE guy here, 428Pi in a 68 Shelby, sold off excess 427SO & 428CJ engines

Yep you're right, we are showing our ages.

what is "fe"?
a 360 can be made into a 390 by changing the rods and crank

Used in cars, trucks, buses, power plants and boats and pretty darn tough.

I had a 68 F100 that I put a 390 and toploader 4-speed in out of my buddy's wrecked 68 fastback mustang, after a full rebuild and balance by the guy I mentioned earlier....purred like a kitten pulled like a mule and could pull 18 mpg if I kept the vacuum gauge at it's top mark.....
