'02 1 ton clutch problem

A friend of mine has an '02 that did a weird thing last night. He was slowing down for a red light but it turned green before he got there so he downshifted to 4th and when he let off the clutch the motor just revved up and the clutch slipped badly. He said he could smell it cooking. He said now he can only use it in 3rd or lower as 4th and higher slip badly. This truck is completely stock and he has never had any indication that the clutch was going out. He said it has never slipped before now. He has around 118,000 miles on it but it is very well cared for.

Could something have broken causing this to suddenly happen? I find it hard to believe that the clutch would go out so suddenly without some type of indication.

What would be the first thing to check?

Thanks for any info.

David

I'd say this is his indication that his clutch on its way out. Although it could be a problem with the master or slave cylinders. My slave cylinder got stuck and fried the clutch for me a few years ago. Perfect opportunity to upgrade to a South Bend.
