01 ctd
01 ctd
Can anybody tell me what the key things to look for when buying an 01 ctd? I want to be sure I look for all the things that could be messed up with the truck before I buy. Thanks for any help.
turn the key on, off, on, off, on then watch the trip guage it will say p-pcu then a code (if there is one) then p-done, then it will say p-ecm and then code (if there is one) then p-done. if you get a p0216 its not good. i would either make them replace the vp44, take 2,000 dollars off of the price, or walk away. I would want the dealer to see a service record and when/if the injection pump has be changed.

Check the trackbar, it's probably shot. Have someone wiggle the wheel while you watch it it might move up and down thats bad. It's not that hard to change and costs about $175 for a new good one. Next see how the transmission shifts, it should be nice and firm. I would also look for large leaks under the truck. Don't be scared if you see oil in the front near a little can that just means that nobody ever drained the breather. Just general inspection, if you have any questions dont be afraid to ask me.

What years can you do the on, off thing and see the codes? I looked at a 99 yesterday and tried that but nothing came up. The 01 that I was going to try to buy the guy that was selling backed out on me. So I'm now looking at an 00 and a 99. Both are ext cab long bed, 4x4, autos. The 00 has 181K miles on it but it was babied and looks like it rolled off the showroom floor. It has a new tranny, injection and lift pumps and has never been used to tow. Most of the miles are highway. The 99 has 170K and has oil all underneath the truck and was used by an elderly couple to haul an RV. It has the original tranny, lift pump, and injection pump. The guys asking $12700 for the 99 and the 00 hes asking $13500. Any suggestions on what to look for and which might be the better buy? I think the 99 just might be a time bomb waiting for something to go out on it. Any input would be grately appreciated.

I would go with the 00 because the main parts that go bad have already been repalced. Check the front end and the block number located on the drivers side front of the engine where the oil pan meets the block under the injection pump, if it says 53 forget about it engines no good.
the 53 block is more prone to cracking than the others, some people never have any trouble some do, they were installed in early second gen trucks i think they stopped the 53 block in 01, someone will correct me if i'm wrong
