The wipers just quit going down the road....yes it was raining. I checked the fuse for the wipers, it's fine....not blown.

Where should I start looking for the problem?

Make sure the linkage didn't pop off, they are known for doing it. Dorman makes replacement plastics I believe.

 

Like patdaly said the linkage is usually the problem. Listen to see if you hear the wiper motor running. If it is running it probably has a bad bushing in the linkage. They can usually be found in the help section at the parts store. If the motor is not running check the ground strap that is on one of the bolts I had a problem with that once.

Try getting home in 40 minutes of whiteout snowstorm, on a highway with little or no exits, that if you pulled over and stopped to wait out the storm, some j-hole would come by and hit you @ 50mph or more because he thinks his 4x4 is unstoppable in the snow.

Don't ask me how I know.

I keep spare bushings in my console now.... you know, just in case of an emergency.

I would bet that the bushings on the linkage just cracked and wore out. Napa sells them for a couple bucks. Pull the cowl off and check it out

 

Mine went out in the same situation. Heavy rain storm while driving down highway 87 from Payson, AZ and eventually I-10 through Phoenix, AZ on my way home a couple of years ago. It was certainly one of the scariest moments I've encountered while driving.

 

So did mine when I was in Iowa. I made a "bushing" and it has been working fine ever since. It just takes a little time taking the cowl off in order to get to the wiper motor.

 

Anyone have a napa part #?

 

NAPA part number 665-1537.

 

I finally got around to checking the wipers, and the motor is fine....so as stated above the linkage is the issue.

I know where the cowl bolts are at....what ALL has to come off to get to the problem? Do the wiper arms have to come off? If so how do they come off?

There is a little clip on the bottom of the wiper arm. While lifting the arm up off of the body (as far as it will go without breaking), slide the little metal plate away from the center of the arm, so that it "locks" the arm upwards in a erect position (you know, like when you search the internet for women in sexy clothing)
Once it's upright, jiggle the arm up and off of the post. Do the same for the other side.

Remove all the screws that hold the panel in place, and slide it up and out from under the windshield gasket. This gives you access to the bushing.


Make sure you clean out all that debris inside of there...

Hmmmm.... I got the wiper to stand upright!.....but it's not coming off very easy is this normal? I don't want to break anything.

Sometimes they can be difficult. Try lightly rocking the arm, and see if it moves. It may have developed rust under there.

Make sure that the arm is perched in it's most upright position, and that the little slide clip is completely outwards as far as it will go.

In theory, it pulls straight off, but I've found light rocking , while pulling straight up does the trick.
