why isn't my exhaust loud??

i have an 89 non i/c 3/4 ton and i have to admit this is my very first 1st gen. i have owned 2nd and 3rd gens but have always wanted a 1st gen. i haven't gotten the cash for the 4 inch system yet so i just straight piped the factory exhaust. i had my brother drive it for me and noticed that it has good tone, just not very loud like the 24 valves (which i thought it would since its still a cummins). i was wondering if when i increase to 4 inch exhaust will it make it louder or am i just stuck with it like that. i like that it isn't loud in the cab, but i want everyone to know when that 1st gen is rolling up.

the tail pipe that goes over the axle is probably crushed like most are, i would just run it in front of the back tire for the most tone and turbo whistle

I have one with a stans exaust and my other one has a strait piped stack. The stans is quiet and the stack is pretty loud. I have the muffler on the stans kit

My 4" Straight Exhaust from the turbo to the back sounds great. The stock exhaust is really crushed over the axle really bad.

well i'm going to put a full 4 inch system with no muffler on the truck, just hope its louder than the stock straight pipe. i like how it doesnt have alot of drone in the cab and that i can still talk on the phone, i just want everyone else on the outside of it to know it's coming.

Mine is crush really bad over the axle and it has a higher pitch sound which is quieter then the 4" systems.

It will be alot better. I don't listen to the radio now, just keep the passenger window down and listen to the exhaust, unless its raining which happens alot then I keep the window up.

When I pulled my stock pipe off, it was pretty UGLY around the transfer case. Crushed and pooey lookin. I cant speak for 4" all the way back, but my stacks are plenty droney loud when pullin 2000+ rpm down the highway. It doesnt sound as loud as my buddies 24 valve at idle tho, the 24 valve sounds more broken up and deeper. Hard to explain. Bottom line is the 12 valve bosch pump is pretty quiet at idle compared to the others.

the 4 inch straight pipe will be loud outside the truck and not bad inside. Much louder then the factory straight piped.

for now your best bet is take the tail pipe from behind the tire, cut the tip and 90* bend off, and put it in front of the rear tire. Completly getting rid of the over the axle part makes a good difference. I switched from that to 4" dp to 5" back, and up to a single 5" stack. Driving and light throttle highway the bigger pipe is noticably quieter than the 3" was. But at WOT the 5" pipe screams. It scared my kids when it was on the dyno, which was the first time I got to hear it from outside. It sounded really mean at WOT.

the turbo whistle is crazy between gears too. Its like a huge blow off valve sound. I love it. lol With the rear window open its almost ear piercing.

Just saw your in Houston, we should meet up somewhere. I've always got my beer fridge stocked and there is a Hooters down the road. Let me know.
