Where to find a driveshaft?

Earlier today the front driveshaft decided to take a dive at 70 miles a hour on the interstate. I just bought the truck and planned to change all the U-joints out when pay day came around but that idea went down the drain. It damaged the exhaust, and transmisson/transfer case mounts which I'll have to address later but first I have to find a front driveshaft. The yoke U-joints and driveshaft are all in bad shape. I've found the yoke and U-joint on Napa's website but the driveshaft has been a little harder. I'm going to start calling local junk yards but does any one have any suggestions where else to find one?

I've got an '03. When the front drive shaft went out I went to the local driveshaft repair shop and he wanted big bucks to repair the shaft. My son works at a Dodge dealership so I thought I would try there just for the heck of it. Before his discount, a new shaft was cheaper than repairing it. I got the whole shaft from yoke to yoke brand new. Might be worth a call to find out if they still carry '93 parts like that.

My cardan joint was SHOT and the slip wasn't slippin no more when I got my truck. Local drive line shop charged me just under $300 for a new complete shaft, simply dropped off the old one and picked up a shiny new one!

Drive shaft repairs although limited in my time have all been pretty fair deals. Shop around and call a few places. I vote try the dealer cause you never know what kinds of crazy high or low prices they may have. The junkyard should have a hollander interchange guide on hand to tell you what trucks have the same shaft.

local drive shaft shop. Inland Truck parts (a chain in my area anyway) or somebody like that.

If nobody local tom woods does good work, so does Jess at High Angle Driveline.

The two driveshafts I've had built at the local driveline shop in the last couple years cost me $126, and $158, with me supplying only the slip yokes. But that's the most expensive part. The slip on these uses a splined stub shaft, so could be in different territory, labor-wise. Dunno.

Being a parts manager at a dealership thats exactly what I thought. The front shaft is discontinued and there is ONE new front driveshaft at a dealership and the cost on it was just over $400.00. I promptly went to Inland Truck Parts and had a shaft built.

I had a complete new drive line built for mine at a local shop for 180.00. That was with a lot heavier splines as well. Shop around. You should come up with somethng.

I used a rear 1410 yoke on the frount out put on the 205 and a 1410 rear yoke off of a Dana 70 and made a drive shaft out of a spare rear shaft I had cut down to fit. NO CVjoints or small u-joints now frount and rear are all the same. The 205 has 32spline out puts F and R and the seals will interchange ( stock frount seal is hard to find) and a Dana 60 and 70 use the same size pinion and seal. Randys Ring&Pinion have all the parts but I just got them off of my parts trucks. You can probobly get them at a junk yard. Cheep and extra strong.

Another vote for Tom Wood's Custom Driveshaft in Utah. Did mine and well known for top notch work at very reasonable prices. Only dirveshaft shop I know of that manufactures their own u-joints!

Why did the front shaft fall out? Was there something loose or broken?

It didn't completely come out, it more or less broke loose. Made a lot of banging noise on the road along with a lot of dirt and grime that flew every where. I wasn't sure what it was only that something blew out under the truck. So I drove it another 30 minutes or so until I got to my house. I have to put the truck in 4 wheel to get up their drive way. When I put it in 4 wheel the whole truck seized up. I got out and looked under the truck and saw the yoke ball joint (or whatever its called) broke and got lodged between the muffler and the shaft( the shaft with the yoke and all was shaped like a L)

I'm not sure what broke first the u-joint or the ball joint but they are all broke now. The muffler is screwed up now as well along with the front seal on the transfer case. And it looks like the jolt on the interstate screwed up the speed o cable. ( it worked before but not now not sure if its related or not)
