It just controls the 3-4 up and down shift. Basically only runs the over drive.
TPS sends out different voltage signals to control when it shifts.
They read in the area of .6v - 1.20v.
As you push the pedal the TPS moves on the fuel pump and the voltage changes sending a signal to the transmission telling it when to shift.

A lot of guys are replacing it with a **** on the dash to manually program the shift point. A cheep and cool fix, even if your is working. Check the sticky on it. Excellent write-up.

If you are having problems with your TPS, save yourself the CA$H and do my TPS-Tightwad-fix. The link is in my sig. Many have tried it and love it. It gives you a lot of control over the shift point, which is very handy, plus it only costs a few bucks and some time. STICK TO THE MAN!
