What is the best way to install my engine in my truck? with or without transmission

Hey,

What is the best way to install my engine in my truck? With the getrag trans mounted or just the engine and then install the transmission and transfercase from underneath? I have a 2 Ton engine hoist

I am swapping everything from my 91.5 W250 to my 93 W150. The frame is cracked on my 91 so I won't reuse it. The 93 Gasser I picked up is rust free and super clean, both are 4x4 models. I kept the rad support, wiring harnesses, diffs and all of the other components that I need from the 91.

Any input would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Cummins Red and Charcoal Grey. Bought 3 cans at the local Cummins dealer. This paint is awesome for a spray can. Red dries really well but the grey took 2 weeks to stop being tacky.

when i took my engine out i dropped the trans out first (sold off the 727) and i actually had to take the front axle out and lower the truck so it would clear (also swapped out 3.07 D61 to 3.54 D60) so it helped. my cherry picker is pretty big and there was no way it would come out without atleast taking the wheels off and dropping the axle on the ground. id bolt up the clutch and bellhousing and drop the engine in by itself. if you have to swap the front rad support you could bolt everything together and roll the truck right under it

Ok, I plan on taking the front rad support and front bumper off. I will be installing the Diesel rad support for it.

If I remove the rad support will I have enough clearance to clear the front cross member? My truck is stock height.

depends on your cherry picker. i cant tell you what will work if i cant see it. ive pulled a 6bt/getrag/205 combo out of a truck before. it was heavy. we actually hooked up the cherry picker to my dual transfercase toyota truck and stuck it in double low and slowly pulled the combo out. the picker was holding fine but good luck rolling it out.

We pulled the rad support to get the motor out of the '89. Also pulled the tranny and t-case out first. When it went back in, we tried it with the bell housing on and was having trouble getting it. Ended up pulling the bellhousing back off, and it went right in. I think you could leave the motor mounts off and get it in there though.

that cherry picker will lift 2 ton at its shortest position, any idea what a cummins/getrag/t-case combo weigh?

I think the Cummins is 1100lb dry and the NP205 is 150lb or so.

Don't know if I have the courage to install it all in one shot with the hoist I have and the clearance issues!!!! And I thought it would be easy hahaha

we'll see how it unfolds when I get started this weekend.

If you install in one shot it is easier if the truck is lifted even 8 inches in the front or as much as you can. My buddy lifted a motor/trans/T-case in one go quiet a feat and he scared the crap out himself the chain settled on the I beam no worries about falling just loud

EDIT : Very clean motor
