What axle in the rear of our trucks?
What axle in the rear of our trucks?
Title pretty much has it. I am looking for a setup kit and master rebuild kit for our trucks. Which Dana70 is the dodge unit? The 70U??
Thanks all
Mark
PS... anyone know the best place to get a master rebuild kit for these beasts??

Randy's Ring and pinion told me the only rear axle that came in ours trucks was a Dana 70U. They said they are all 32 spline, too. I am not sure how set in stone the spline count is though.
I think W350's had a 70HD?? Also, I've heard even the SRW 70's, some are 35 spline. The best thing to do is get the numbers stamped in the axle tube, that'll tell you exactly what that axle was set up with when it was made.
I am contemplating trying my own carrier swap (got a powr-lok out of a 95)
There is a writeup on pirate4x4 that shows in depth how to set up a dana 70.

Guess I'll call Randy's or Reider and get the 70U master install.

Yup, that's right. 32.
However, while rebuilding your rear diff, you can upgrade the side gears in the Powr-Loc, or buy a Detroit for 35 spline axles. Then buy the corrisponding Yukon 35 spline chromoly axles for the correct length. Yukon also sells cut-to-length axles as well. Your spindles should accept the 1.5" dia of the 35 spline shafts. You may have to machine the last two threads or the spindle, due to the backside of the Yukon chromo shaft is thick in the cup area. Seems that every axle is a bit different.
I deal with Randy's almost every day. Excellent parts (USA) excellent service and prices.
The Pirate4x4 article is a good one, but you really, really should use a case spreader on the big Danas, to allow proper carrier bearing pre-load. Espically with a diesel.

I have full intentions of using a case spreader.
I also have to find preload for the carrier. From the article I gathered .006 (to three or four good whacks with a deadblow hammer)
