Angry Went to buy a rear dif input seal, $159! ***!!!

The rear input seal in the rear axle is leaking so i went to VIP (a yankee pep-boys) and they said it was $159. Whats up with that, its just a regular seal. Is this right or is there a place i can pick one up for about $150 less?

yes its the pinion seal. They take like 5 minutes to change and are usually $5 max for most other rear ends. I'll try that west coast place out, thanks.

I just look them up. Advanced auto has them for about $15.

Looks like from Napa part number 18896 (NOS - Napa Oil Seal) runs $15.49. From Autozone part number 9316 (Timken) runs $9.99. Spend the extra $130 on a Pyrometer...or something!

There's a whole thread on rear lube just a few days back. Here's a link: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=69109
Mobil 1 synthetic seems to be the most preferred. Something like a 85W-140 is the recommended for towing apps. That's according to WannaDiesel.

That worked out great. I got the seal at NAPA for $14 and i have been hanging on to a gallon of 85w-140 for almost 6 years in hopes i would need it. Money saved.

Are you sure they weren't quoting you for installation?
