i am hopeful you diesel doctors can give me a diagnosis online....getrag it is a reman unit as inscribed on the plate on the tranny....so i dont know how many catrillion miles are on it...it shifts smoothly through all gears into 5th...THEN the fun starts...sometimes...it wont shift OUT of 5th...the shifter will go into what should be neutral postition...but tranny is still in fifth...after much jostling most of the time it will finally shift down into 4th and then it is fine...occasionally i have to stop...and shift into reverse...then all is well....i have tried double clutching and rev hunting doesnt seem to matter....

i drained the tranny and put in new havoline and tried to overfill as much as possible (just over 4 litres)...the tranny doesnt make any noises and otherwise works fine any ideas??? thx...vs

 

Nothing's wrong in the gears, it sounds like the gear selector mechanism is worn out. Unfortunately my service manual says that the top cover assembly is not serviceable so I can't give you any more info on what's wrong inside and what you can do to fix it.
