Question Weird Shifting

Aside from my 3-4, 4-3 shifting I've been taking notice of another odd issue I've been having with my auto tranny. When you're coming from a dead stop and it shifts from 1-2, 2-3, it then downshifts to 2 and then back to 3. After that it doesn't slip or anything but it seems to do that quite often. It's definately more noticable when you feather the pedal but it still seems to do.

Any suggestions?

Mike

Is there a TV cable on an auto Cummins, or is it the TPS on these trucks? It'll be one of those that controls the shifts....someone with auto experience will chine in soon

Well the TPS is new... the last time I checked anyway. I got it checked at my uncles tranny shop when they hooked the computer up to the truck. Everything SEEMED normal.

The CTD auto's have both. The TPS is strictly to do with 3-4, 4-3.
The TV cable will determine your upshifts....if the cable is set foward too far it will result in late shifts..and likely some touchy up/down.
Try adjusting it ever so slightly..it doesn't take much and you don't want to go too far...
Make sure the cable is also moving fully forward when at idle/stop condition. It MUST have a return spring, either up by the throttle return spring or down below on the throttle valve shaft were the cable connects to the tranny.
It is important that you confirm the cable is moving fully thru it's forward and backward range...if not that alone could be affecting your shifts so check it..

Look at the TV cable...you'll see were it goes thru a mounting bracket just on the engine side of the brake booster.....JUST back of the bracket "opening" were the cable passes thru is a white flat plastiv pivot...
Slip a flat blade screwdriver under the forward part of the pivot close to the bracket and flip the tab up...then, you can move the TV backward or forward to adjust. KEEP TRACK of you original position from the very start cause that's important.
