I hear a fairly loud hissss until I touch the brake pedal, and it goes away. Booster shot?

Sure sounds like it. The seal is good till you depress the brake pedal.

No booster shot needed(flu season is upon us though), I'd say it sounds like you have Snakes On A Truck!!! But actually probably is the booster...Hisssssss-ing at you!!
