Vacuum canisters
Vacuum canisters
One of the vacuum canisters on the bottom of my power steering resevior fell off. Unfortunately, three of the screws broke off in the power steering part. I bungeed it back to the engine for the time being, but now I am leaking oil out of it. Has anyone ever done this repair before? Do I need to replace everything (power steering resevoir, vacuum canisters etc.?) Does the unit come as one piece? Thanks for any advice

The best thing to do, is fined a good used vacume unit off a 91 intercooled and up. I got a good used one for mine for $100.00, U will have much better brakes and not have to worrie about oil leeking out or the can's or the can's going bad or breaking off. I made an L mount for the bottom and cut the throttle bracket off so the powerstreeting will clear.
Someone is going to correct me if I am wrong, but the part you are talking about is the vacuum pump. There should be two attached to the steering pump mount. They are attached with 4 bolts each. I believe that the diaphragm is attached with three screws. The vacuum pump comes as an assembly (diaphragm and mount). Autozone had the best price I found unless you get lucky on Ebay. You can work it easily by removing the 2 bolts from the power steering mount and rotating the assembly to access the vac pump mount bolts. You may not even need to do that if it was the upper pump that failed. Seems like this is the second one in a couple of weeks on this board that the screws broke in. Good Luck.
