I've been on that road a bit between Tucson and Phoenix and I've never liked it. If your doing 80 you better stay in the right lane. Glad your OK.

Glad to hear that your allright. I have lived in Az. all my life and have seen dust storms like that, but never in the winter, allways during the monsoon season. That is one dangerous highway.....

 

I resurrected this old thread because I thought that some of you may travel to or through AZ and it is a good idea to know about these dangerous dust storms. I am in Mexico right now, but this happened last night. They say it is one of the biggest in History. Very fast and dangerous. It was 70 miles wide, 5000 feet deep and a few thousand feet High. I ran into a snow white out whilst bringing my 1990 home from Colorado last year. As I ducked in ahead of a truck stopped on the shoulder I could barely see the ram hood ornament in front ov me. This about an hour West of Lincoln NE. When I got back to work and my mates asked how the trip went, my response was, "Terrifying". First experience with that sort ov thing, and I will make some effort to insure it will be the last... or at least the last that catches me so flat-footed, and suprised anyway...

Zero visibility is zero visibility. I have been in fog in the San Bernerdino mountains on my way to Mammoth Lakes ski area, with zero visibility and idiots passing me at 70 mph. What the experts say to do is get off the road and turn your lights off, so the people that are following the tail lights don't run up your rear end. This would have been scary in 2009 on I-10 because there was about an eight or ten foot berm that you would have flown off of. I watched cars flying off the roadway. The other big difference between 2009 and yesterday is that you could see yesterday's coming and act accordingly, in 2009, I had around 30 seconds and it was just a wisp of dust in the distance, literaly the birth of a dust storm. I live in downtown Phoenix near the airport and one time I was on my roof when a giant dust storm like yesterday's came and I saw 1 aircraft disappear into the cloud of dust, while landing and another right behind aborted and went around. It was like watching a movie...Mark

 

Well being a trucker I've run in most weather, and near zero visibility many a time, but never a big dust storm like that!! Guess you'd need to change your air cleaner after that one....

 

I have been in "White out's" in Montana, Fog in Bakersfield, and Dust in Mojave. It is truly frightening no matter WHAT it is. I just missed a horrific pile up in Bakersfield, and it just amazes me how people can just blaze into these conditions blindly. That said, they can ALL sneak up on you so quickly you would'nt believe it! And then, when you enter it, it is so hard to decide, stop, or creep along???
I pity the people that lost thier lives, and or thier loved ones.

 

I am not there right now, but the entire city is covered in dust and the air is full of dust. The news showed a line a block long at a car wash. The really silly thing is that there is a chance of a repeat tonight. If I were there I think I might wait a few days to wash my cars. It has been the top story all day long, slow news day I guess ...Mark

The important thing is to AT LEAST slow down. I don't understand what people are thinking, or maybe they just think that these things only happen to other people...Mark
