Turbo upgrade advice.

Before I order my GDS 60mm h1c upgrade kit tomorrow I wanted to get some of ya'll opinions. I've been searching this kit alot on the board and most of ya'll seem to like it quite well. You can read all my trucks mods in my sig. I plan to turn my fuel screw a 2 couple turns before runaway and get some bosch 190 sticks in a few months.

Will I be happy with the GDS upgrade kit or will I need to go a different route? I do tow with my truck. I have the 18.5cm exhaust housing and plan to keep it.

Thanks. Justin.

I have one on my truck and like it. But if I could have afforded it I would have went with a bigger turbo, something like a S300 or something along those lines. But for the money I think it is a good upgrade.

Save your money and get a real turbo, hx-40, s300, or if you could get a he315 for cheap go that route.

Would any modifications be needed to install a hx-40? How is a hx-40 compared to my current turbo as far as specs?

You'll need a 4" downpipe flange. If you got a super 40, then It has a 60mm compressor that flows as much as a s300, 65mm turbine, and a 16cm wastegated housing.

For 80% of first gen guys, the H1C/GDS is plenty.

I agree with apwatson, save your money and get a real turbo. I don't see the point in upgrading a 16 year old turbo, when it is still going to be less efficient than other 60mm turbos.

If you do get a HX40 or S300, you can run bigger injectors than the 190's. I seem to recall reading they are barely bigger than stock, and won't be a huge upgrade. But with a bigger turbo, you could run 370's or similar and still be able to tow. Brian's tow truck, ran 370's and a Super HX40, dyno'd right at 400rwhp, and he kept it cool.

On an I/C'd truck it really depends on if you're going for more fuel/bigger injectors. On a non-I/Cd truck I'd tend to agree the hybrid turbo upgrade will never be enough.

My setup seems well matched and I have no plans to upgrade anything further. It does exactly what I want, I'm happy with it and haven't managed to break anything either. It just depends on your plans and use for the truck.

Unless there's something wrong with my hybrid, i've never been impressed with it. Could only keep 15psi manifold pressure cool towing. Had enough fuel to make 28psi, but could only use half! Then I upgraded to the PS IC then I could use 20psi, but still.

I've got mine to where it's EGT-safe with the fuel screw 2 turns "out," PSIC and W/M. It'll run wide open at around 25psi like that all day (or until I run out of water), 1200 EGT, give or take on those numbers depending on load and terrain, but you get the idea.

Don't you have 190s, Aaron?

OK but you're cheating with your W/M

and yeah i've got 190's, which really aren't much over stock, I only gained 2psi manifold from stock. Same pump settings.

Thanks for all the advice. The truck is my daily driver and I don't want to get too crazy with mods and kill my fuel milage, being the reason I plan on running bosch 190's.

It really depends on what you're doing with the truck. If it's a work truck/tow vehicle, I think you will need to spend alot of money to be able to use alot of fuel. Heck, I've spent alot just getting the most out of the the stock injectors.

If it's a play truck you can use alot of fuel for 10 seconds at a time and save some money.
