Turbo Help

Im new at this so bear with me. I have been reading about the upgrades to the turbo and was wondering what to put in my truck. Im lookin to improve (if i can, if not keep it the same) mpg but also want to be able to tow a trailer fairly easy. I was wondering if a 16cm upgrade is what i need or is the 12cm better. I might take my truck to the pulls as they have a stock and slight modified classes. What is best and where to get it. This truck is otherwise a daily driver. A little info would help. Thanks!!

If you are not going to add big injectors the 12 cm housing makes a 5 speed truck a lot more fun to drive. It may hurt the highway economy some.

Bolt on an HX35 and a 16cm housing and you'll be set. Add injectors and tune the pump and you'll have a bundle of power, low temps, and easy to drive without sacrificing mileage.

Get the 12cm if you hardly ever pull a trailer. It tends to bring EGT's up. If you don't mind keeping your foot out of it when pulling up hills with a trailer strapped to the back then you could get away with using the 12cm. The 16cm is great for pulling but you sacrifice a little bit of spool up time. I'm not sure what year your pickup is. If its a 92 then you have a 21cm housing stock known as the "LAGMASTER". If its any other first gen year but that, then you have an 18cm stock. Basically if you're already running an 18cm then buying a 16cm isn't worth the money. However, if you want the 12cm then go for it. The driveability changes a lot, especially with a 5 speed as wannadiesel has said. I compromised and got a 14cm that I picked up for $200 off of ebay. Most people don't recommend getting a 14cm because 12's can usually be had cheaper. My personal recommendation... if you don't pull very often then get a 12cm and a stage 3 or 4 kit from HTT. Then go to work on the full power screw She'll stay cool enough for hot rodding

I have a 92 250 CTD with a getrag. I have the fuel cranked up and the timing advanced. I am putting in new larger injecters this spring( p.o.d. I think). What should i do about my turbo? I pull 10k lbs. trailers once a week drive it to work daily and I like to stand on it and blow smoke all over town.I want more power but dont want to drop a **** load of cash. What should i do?

My first thought would be 16cm housing and a Stage 4. But I'm not sure if that would move enough air to keep 10k cool with POD's and a maxxed pump. Wait for some other members to chime in that have been in your position.

I don't think a Stage IV/16 will keep that cool. A Schwitzer based turbo would be ideal, but that'll cost quite a bit. You could run an HX40 from a junkyard for under $500, but they are known to be unreliable if surged or run much over 40psi. You'd also want to make sure you get one with the 60mm, 6 blade wheel.

My truck is a 93. Will have to change my sig. Okay now where do i get these mods?? HTT sounds like a product name, do they make the hx? I will probably add bigger injectors. Will i also need to change my head gaskets? I prefer not to do that unless y'all recommend it. I do know how to fix engines as im in the proccess of restoring a '47 farmall tractor and have tried to fix my f150 to no avail. That truck is the reason i bought a dodge and a good one at that I just dont know much of diesels yet. Anything else that i have to replace/watch out for when changing the turbo housing? Thanks all,

Head gasket will be fine if you keep the boost under 40 psi and you don't go nuts with the timing.

I just replaced the stock H1C with the "Lagmaster 21" housing with a used HX35-12 WG housing and I absolutely love it! I set the WG to 32 psi and couldn't be happier. Unloaded EGTs in the mountains are 1100 deg with my tweaked pump (fuel screw in 2 turns, stock fuel pin turned/nylon washer shaved, smoke screw in 2 turns). Truck runs strong!! I don't ever load the truck, and if I do I can easily control the heat with my right foot. Made it a lot more fun to drive.

My local shop said that the 16cm on the stock turbo...? It make sense that the turbo spools up faster and does more work for you instead of having to put a lot of skinny pedal into it...

Once you turn the fuel up, the 18.5 spools pretty good. If you have an automatic the 16 cm is not worth switching to from the 18.5.

I am thoroughly enjoying this thread, because I am also a newbie here trying to learn all I can about turbo's Not to hyjack the thread, but I also have a turbo related question, so I figured I would post it here. I also have a 93 W250 with the H1C 18cm housing (I believe). I thought the 92's only had the lagmster 21cm housings??? Anyway, my truck could stand a little more pep! I think the stock torque converter on the A518 is starting to go, so this could possibly be one reason while my rig is slugish from a dead stop? I just bought a WH1C with the 12cm housing during the summer, but haven't installed it yet. I should, as it is in my sig, but haven't 'got her done' yet Manily; because I still have a factory exhaust and am worried about high EGT's with the WHIC (and stock exhaust). My main question is: with the A518 auto in my rig, would I be better off with a HX35 16cm housing, or the WH1C 12cm housing (which I have now)? There probably wouldn't be much of a noticeable performance difference, between the stock H1C 18cm housing, and an HX35 with a 16cm housing? My rig is mainly a weekend hauler - 5K boat, 8k 18' flatbed. My knowledge of turbo's is pretty basic, so bear with me here Any input is appreciated! PS- I just ordered a full set of Danin/Optix guages from Geno's, or else I would upgrade the exhaust to take care of EGT's. That will have to wait, as I have no $ right now
