Which Turbo?

I have a relatively stock 92, 5 speed, and I want a quicker turbo. Should I go with a HX-35 with a 12 cm wastegated housing, or should I get a 12 cm wastegated housing for my stock turbo? I would like to know which one would spool up faster, while still giving me boost on the high end.

Thanks

You can pick up an HX with a 12 or 14cm housing anywhere for around a $100. I have purchased two, the first one I got for $50 and the second for $100. It's easier in my opinion.

That's probably the fifth or sixth time I've seen someone say HX35's are cheap and easy to find. I have yet to see one go for less than $250-$300. I'd love to know your source.

If you can find a cheap, good HX35, go for it.

I usually get $175-$200 for a hx35. The best I have done is $250.

Hx35s have 3" outlets. I have only seen one custom exhaust housing that a guy made that accepted a 4" outlet.

To put a wastegated housing on you usually have to cut out a section of your factory downpipe and reweld it since the housing is slightly longer.

An HX-35 is a very small upgrade from the stock H1C, so I think it would be better to just get a 12cm housing for your turbo.

Unless your H1C has 400K miles on it, then you may want to go with a lower mile HX...

Hx35 has a map width enhancing slot, which means your turbo wont bark or flutter when your off the fuel quickly. Its a good upgrade for the 5 speed.

The smaller the turbo housing, the more it will spool no matter the rpm. It spools down low cause it takes less air to spin it, and it will spin higher at the top end because the same principle. Thats why the 12cms are wastegated.

HX35's wont bark (wooh-wooh-wooh) after a hard throttle shot because of the map slot

HX35's are 56/60

and Stock 92 H1C is a 56/60 so there the same there but HX35's sounds awesome because of the map slot, especially on a stick truck

putting a 12cm or even a 16cm housing on your truck from your stock 21cm will make it feel like you added a million horsepower

Just remembered, is the intake side of the turbo the same size as my H1-C? Is the downpipe the only thing that I have to change?

yea the intake is the same. You should upgrade to a 4 inch downpipe while your there, make one or buy a pricey one from www.stansheaders.com

Yes, the intake side is the same size. Just clamp your stock intake on, and it's good to go.

If you still have your stock downpipe, then you don't have to change the downpipe if you can find a '95-'98? model HX35. They have the same style exit flange on the rear of the exhaust housing, and your stock downpipe will clamp to that. However, the '98.5-'02 HX35 used a cast iron elbow which will not work as is. If you find a later model HX35, you can use it, but you will have to find the earlier style exit flange (they are interchangeable).

I recently put an HX35 on my truck, and it made a huge difference even with minimal mods. If you have any questions about putting it on just let me know.

Why do you guys keep saying a 1992 has a 21cm housing. Mine has a 18.5. I just went out and crawled underneath the down pipe to see it. But it clearly says Holset 18.5cm. Did someone else instal this on the truck? The truck had a banks exhaust on it when I bought it so its possible. My dad has 3 of these trucks. I am going to check his tomorrow. One he bought right off the showroom floor in late 92. I know its never had any mods done to it! Also is there any detailed pics on here for installing the 60mm spinwheel? Thanks

I think they switched back at the half year, so you and I have a 92.5.
