Transmission Quit?

Transmission mysteriously quit work. I moved it from in front of the garage door friday night, went to put fuel in it on sunday and it won't move. Now I didn't move it more than 50 ft on friday, what would make it not work 2 days later? Fluid is where it should be and is as clean as new, linkage is all moving as it should, transfer case is engaging and disengaging as far as I can tell. The only funny thing is that I can shift it in and out of 4X4 while it's in park and the rest of the gears. I thought they would only do that while in neutral. The trans still goes into Park and holds, but the second I take it from park it rolls backwards down the driveway. What could this be? I haven't even driven the truck other than the ride home from Virginia and moved it friday night. I just got it legal on friday and would have liked to use it to drive to work, instead my luck doesn't work that way I guess. Any help?

When mine did that, I found a broken input shaft. I hope your luck is better.

Me too. I just don't understand how it can work, sit for a day and then not work.

Oh, and the transmission is brand new, has about 600 miles on it.

Did your TQ converter drain back into trans? Sometimes when mine sits a long time, it takes a minute to get the tq converter filled back up. Other than that i would make SURE your transfer case is in gear.

I let it sit running in neutral to warm up for probably 10 minutes and still did nothing. As far as the transfer case, the light comes on that it's engaging and disengaging but as far as that I don't know.

Well, the no grinding you mentioned makes me think maybe the linkage came apart to your transfer case...i would look into that. The light on your dash is just telling you that the shifter is in 4wd...

I watched underneath while my buddy shifted the 4X4 shifter and it moved in and out of the t-case. Could it be something inside the t-case? I have a spare t-case, should I swap it?

Actually the switch for 4x4 is in the t-case itself, on the shift rail itself.

I would be looking towards the flex plate or the tranny to t-case coupler.

Well I would think if it was a flexplate problem it would have made a noise (I've had it happen before, tore the entire center out of a my D250 a couple years ago) and it would make a noise when running. This truck doesn't though.

Well next thing would be to pull the t-case check the coupler and see if the output of the tranny turns(while in gear).

I agree, if something was broke or came uncoupled somehow, something would be turning to make some noise or something. unless the torque converter bolts came out and it slid back away from the flywheel? You just had the tranny out, is the linkage to the tranny all good? It sounds to me like something fell apart like a linkage to tranny. nothing else would explain why it worked one day then not the next.

I didn't have the trans out, the guy I traded my dually to did. Everything is operational, well except for the fact that it doesn't move. Park is still there just nothing else, RND21 all act as neutral. What ever it is the trans is not spinning the t-case, if it were there would be grinding. But I can run from Park to 1st and still shift the 4X4 shifter from 4L to 4H and no grind, no jump, no skip, not a peep.

Put your trans in P

Throw your t-case in Neutral.

Your truck will roll backwards. When you put the t-case in gear it will stop the truck. Your problem is in front of the park prowl. That means from the tailhousing forward.

I am personally leaning toward a broken input shaft or a cracked front hub (drum??) this will let fluid leak by and not engage the bands. (no hydraulic pressure) It also could possibly be the pump itself...

Seriously? How did it work one day with absolutely no problem and not the next? I drove it all the way from Virginia with out a problem, except the alternator and belt tensioner. The trans shifted beautifully, it's brand new. The 4wd doesn't work because I haven't swapped the 3.54's out of the front yet so I can't even blame it on an off-road incident.

Maybe there was a underlying problem with the t-case that nobody saw when the trans was rebuilt. That is probably the next thing to eliminate from the equation, given the fact that you checked all the easy and common stuff.
