just finished a 5-speed swap on my friends truck made me think about converting myself but with the price of 29 spline NP205s it makes me think not!
so is there any reason why you couldnt get a custom 23 to 29 spline coupler to mate the two? there was lots of room around the trans and t-case output/input shafts.
did a search and didnt come up with anything

i dont see why not, if you had both, cut them both in half and weld them back together, with a lathe of course. but i dont see why you couldnt, i wanted to do this same thing but i ended up rebuilding my 29 spline and not using my extra 23 spline.
I talked to a machine shop about this and they said no problem. I didn't ask how much though. But was told that the transfer case is different where it connects to an auto vs the 5sp., I don't know if this is true or not so i haven't persued it and not quite ready to change it out anyways.

well the bolt pattern is the same. i dont know what else would be different. im stuck between the 47rh and a stick. after driving my friends truck it felt so right. ive driven a few heavy duty trucks with 10-15 speeds and it makes me think about a road ranger swap
With the 10 or 15 sp you wouldn't have to worry about shelling it out. It would weigh alot though. You would need an air supply for the big trans too. But it would sound pretty cool rowing thru 15 gears in a lil truck. With my 15 speeds I never used the bottom 5 to 7 gears unless the ground was soft.
what's different is the diameter of the cast where the coupler fits: the 23 spline is a smaller outside diameter. So, that part has to be machined out.
One thing I wonder: how many accounts are there of a 23 spline ripped by the torque of manually shifting? If Dodge went ahead with a beefier coupler, there probably was a reason, still makes you wonder if it wouldn't hold...

people use lock up TCs on auto trans and sled pull.. not sure. im not sure if im even going to do the swap but its been in my mind. 47rh is too easy for me but i love shifting
The 29 spline 205 case is machined for a larger input bearing to go with the 29 spl. unit.
You could always try it. If you snap it off, just upgrade then. You will probably run accros a 29 spl. 205 as soon as you get the adapter made.

I looked for a 23 to 29 spline adapter when I had the 5600 in my first gen swapped out for a 47RH.(I had 29spline 205 and needed to adapt to 23sp output on 47rh) I was told the 23 spline 205 shaft would not hold up so i made a coupler. I did not weld the 2 together because of the possibility of breaking at the weld. I cut the 2 sleeves in halve, cut meshing teeth in the ends and encased them in a tube with overlap on the ends so they could flex independently but not seperate(like an implement slip clutch inside a tube). It has held for several years now with no issues.
When i first installed it i was in the 700hp range.I checked it about 2 months ago and it was still fine. I turned the od of both sleeves concentric to the id and the same size. I cut them so that after cutting the teeth in them they would be the right length when mated together. I bored a set of jaws in the mill and cut 4, 45 degree slots 90 degrees apart( like slices of pie). This leaves 4 slots and 4 matching bosses that will mate together when placed end to end. I then took a piece of 3/8 wall tubing and bored a counter bore in in deep enough for the entire sleeve to slide into it and bottom out. I then made a cap for it and welded it in place. When done I slid it back on an arbor and re-cut the od and ends for balance.It only has about .001 clearance on the id and the ends. I used an end mill with .03 radius so there wasn't a sharp corner in the bottom of the slots. when mated together the two halves tend to not force each other apart and stay concentric. The outer tube just keeps them from seperating. Hope that makes sense.
