towing skidsteer (tow rating)
towing skidsteer (tow rating)
I have towed skidsteer with my truck several times with no problems. I never gave a thought to how much weight i was towing until I went to buy my own trailer. I started researching the weight of the skidsteer (6000-7000lbs) and the gvw of the trailer (10,000-12,000lb) the trailer weighing about 2300 lbs and I dont think that factory gvcw for an automatic dually with 3.54 gears is rated for that kind of load but I would like to hear from real world experience with a first gen. also I need advice about the trailer to buy 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb the first of the 2 is going to be a little overloaded if I need to have a backhoe att. or a concrete breaker on the trailer as well as the skidsteer. I know I should post this in the towing section but I figured since we are a small portion compared to the 2nd and 3rd gen didnt figure my first gen brothers would mind.

I have a tandem axle dump trailer rated at 14,000 gvw that I haul around a bobcat in,the truck seems to pull it around alright in town. The freeway is another question as I have not done the freeway trek just yet, although I think I need some help in the rear end {beefier suspension}if anyone has a suggestion I'm all ears. marc
Go for the heavier rated trailer. I have towed 10-12K behind me with a stock auto with no issues. I have also grossed in the mid 20s regularly with a manual, and had no problems. Just accelerate and brake easily, make sure the trailer has 2 brake axles, and they are up to par.
unclemarc- yes, I have a suggestion- get a dually. That or some helper air ride springs, and a swaybar.

Just bought a 16' 12,000 lb Big Tex drop axle trailer with all wheel brakes this afternoon for $3700 I compared it to a cronkhite trailer (one of the best you can buy for a skid steer) and I was impressed with it. The salesman said that it is a model they have special made for their company to compete with cronkhite and after a side by side comparison the Big Tex was alot more solidly built more like a 14,000 lb. thank for the replies.
My Tracked SS is ~10,000# + accessories ~1200# each, (I usually take 4)
my trailer is rated 22,000# and weighs 5,000#
I often Gross 25,000+ and tow in mountains. (pic in my gallery)
1t W350, slushy a518 (I haven't installed my DTT tc yet, I really want a better suited truck for this application) preferrably a 'tandem hook lift' with a 10+ spd and jake. I'm always needing a dump for import and export of materials, and it would be really nice to have an extra hyd high flow source to run bobcat chipper (without adding hrs to machine)

Go ahead and tow it. As long as everything is secure and working properly do it. I'm a tick over with the trailer GVW while towing our skid steer. GVW on the trailer is 10,000 and our skid steer weighs 10,000
