big dif with 4x4 and 2x4

Theres a big diffrence between a 2wd and a 4x4. And also the auto with O/w, and just the 727, and then of course the 5 speeds.
Pulling my jeep I got 12.5. emty and not doing a tick over 70 with 35's hwy driving 21-22. Right now I get 16-18 in town, with aa slipping converter.

I get a consistant 12 pulling a 26' Sea Ray (~6,000lbs) on a two lane at 55mph.

All the way down to 10-11 hauling 14,000lb hay bales over similar roads.

My auto is stock to the best of my knowledge.

I get 12.5 mpg loaded. My truck is a car hauler and is loaded 95% of the time and weighs about 13,600 while loaded. I checked the mileage on straight diesel and also checked mileage using Power Service and Howes Meaner Cleaner additives. I get about 1 more mile per gallon using one or the other of the additives...... which saves me more than I spend on them. I am not endorsing additives, but that is what I found when I tried them.

Scott, was there anything special you had to do to register the truck for more weight? Or in general, how does that work... when I changed the title over to my name for my truck, they just asked me what the gross weight was and since the sticker only says "over 10,000" I just told them 10,000, which is fine for now. But my goal is to eventually get a Hodges-type bed, and it seems that even brand new 1-ton trucks only get rated for about 13,500 at the most...which would work, but a 20' car hauler bed would be much more useful if not restricted to a 4,000 pound load.

Also, if you have any build pics of your truck I'd love to see 'em!

My truck is licensed as an antique vehicle, so there is no weight restrictions as far as legal limits. Or are you referring to the maximum gross weight by Dodge?

No, I was referring to the weight it could legally carry. Ahwell, I'll figure it out someday.

In MO, if you pay for the tags, you can get whatever gross weight rating you want (with my CDL, I could run 80Ks if I were so inlcined). I run 24K on mine- I only tow a few times a year, but it's only $50 more than 12K tags- way less than the fine for getting caught overweight. I wont do like a lot of cheapskates around here and run 6Ks on a 6500- 8000# truck.

MIke T- put your stock pin back in next time you tow. My mom has a truck identical to mine only auto, and she averages 14-16 towing a 4000# lawn mower, 16-18 empty. Her auto is also incredibly sloppy. When I owned it way back when (8 years and 150K ago), I got 14-16 towing a 24ft box trailer loaded to 8-11K; 20-22 empty. But this was at Colo altitudes, and I have always gotten better MPGs out there than back here. Must be the extra humidity here.

CHrisreyn- Did your last truck really get 26mpg empty, like the ad said when he was selling it?
