Towing MPG With an Auto

I had a chance for the first time to tow my boat and some other equipment which came to approx. #4200. Most of the time I was able to stay in OD doing 65-70 mph except for two brief moments. The trip also included a little city. I was dissapointed when I realized that I only got 11mpg. My friends 03 dodge with a six speed on the same trip got over 13mpg with a cab over which which weights about the same as what I had. Is my mileage the norm with an auto? I'm also wondering if a little more timing would help? The trip was about 200 mi. I know you guys whith sticks do better.

Thanks
Mike

11 mpg is about what average. The mpg numbers in my sig were from my latest trip, which was in your part of the country.

Later, Tony

With my cabover I get about 12 mpg but my truck gets comparatively bad mileage (about 15 mpg @ 70 mph) when running without the camper. It has a 727 trans. Thats why the truck became a yard ornament for the last year and my jeep gets all the use.

It seems you still have the stock TC. and getting good mileage. I would have been happy with with around 13. Now I'm wondering what I'm going to get when I add on a cabover.

Thanks

Mike T, you have a tach? I wonder if your spinning freely too much, and that is contributing? Compare empty to load, check boost/egt numbers. I have a generator I pull around some, around 5500 lbs and I can still muster 15-16, empty 18-19.

Thanks Fred, yes I have a tach. I'll take some notes and next time I tow I'll have something to compare to. I know I don't do as good as you empty either. Maybe I should have ordered a tighter TC

I like using my Yukon for towing, cant beat that thing. Aside from it I gotta 07' Dmax (yea I know hahaha) but its got the LBZ and free fuel. I'm looking forward to seeing what mpg I get towing with the 92'

My truck gets around 18mpg towing my race car on my 18' flatbed which weighs around 5500 lbs with all my crap in the back. I was pretty surprised when i ran the numbers for the first time gettin that good. This was on a 120 mile round trip with some city driving. Man i love my CUMMINS. got 23mpg last week on a 320 mile round trip empty. Truck ran so good at 70mph the whole way.

Pulling 10K, not using OD and not driving hard, I get 11. Heel to steel, I get 9ish.

My trailer is a Bison 3 horse w/living quarters adn the title says the empty weight is 8880 lbs. Once loaded with a couple horses and all our gear/food and extra "stuff", I am guessing it weighs about 11-12K. It is a high profile with a flat nose, and I am getting around 13-15 running 65-70..
I am getting about 18-19 empty......and I think it stinks compared to what I was getting with my last truck that had the Getrag........

I think one of my reasons I got poor fuel economy towing is the ddp fuel pin. Where I live is about 4600' and mountains all around. Your either going up or down. I have a valet switch which I didn't use on this trip. I think it would have helped a lot if I did. What I'm not sure about is where to set my timing; I'm about 1/8 now. You guys with autos getting good mileage towing, where do you have your timing set?

Thanks
Mike
