TOWING A LATE 91 With AN AUTOMATIC.
I am thinking about towing a late 91 with an automatic for 165 miles. Have a tow bar that connects to the bumper. Looked at my 90 with the 727 3-speed 2wd and noticed it has 2 drive shafts with a center support. The second drive shaft has a bellows in the front and a u-joint connected to the rear end.
Does the late 91 have the same thing? If so can the second drive shaft be removed without the loss of trans fluid or do I need to remove the u-joint and tie the shaft to the frame for towing? (HELP)!!!

Depends on the truck. If it's a 2wd extended cab it has a 2 piece shaft, you can just remove that and lose no fluid. 2wd standard cab is going to have a 1 piece driveshaft with a slip yoke - you will lose fluid if you pull it out. Unbolt it from the rear and strap it to a crossmember with a ratchet strap.
If the truck is a 4x4, put the transfer case in neutral and get going, no need to drop shafts.

Bruce,
Just remove it from the rear end and tie it up with a piece of wire or rope. Leave it plugged into the tranny and tie it so it can't slip back or fall down. No problem. Or you could leave the engine idling and the tranny in neutral during the tow.
