timing cover

I took the truck to a mechanic (the guy who should me the truck) and while he has looking at the engine he noticed there was a plug missing in the top of the timing cover. He know thinks the timing covers needs to be replaced $1100 for the part from a dealer. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one for less $$. Thanks

holy cow... he's crazy... are you talking where the filler neck goes into the timing cover... That is the only thing I can think of that would require a plug...

Yeah, for $1100, I'd drive anywhere in the Lower48 to do that job, and I'd include ALL parts, labor, and fuel. I cant think of anything that needs a plug, or even a plug in the timing cover, period. Except maybe the oil filler tube, which gets CAPPED in some ag/const/industrial applications.

You don't suppose he's talking about replacing the timing CASE do you? Like the KDP fell out and the case is cracked? $1100 would make more sense if that were the situation.

The part the is missing is on the left if looking at the truck. What I saw was a small spot that looked like a plug came out like the oil filler tube...it was threaded and there is a small crack in that. The truck had been running fine. I do think he was talking about replacing the whole case. I called him back and he is going to make a plug and cap it off.
