Timing

I may need to time My IP after I removed it and now I can't get it started. I read here before about some guys making their own timing kit is that possible? I really need the truck back up and running and didn't plan to spend money on a new timing kit, anyone know where to get the parts? I have a harbor freight store near Me and I have seen they have dial indicators what else do I need?

Thank You.

What about this one, do I need just the dial indicator for this?

The pump will only go on one way. The pump is keyed to the pump gear, which is timed to the engine. I wouldn't worry about any of those above kits. One you could've not installed the key on the pump shaft properly into the pump gear. Now the woodruff key got smashed allowing the shaft to rotate independantly of the gear, screwing up your pump to engine timing.

Two if you tore your pump down and rebuilt it, the only other way to get it out of time is if you installed the cam plate and rotor 180deg out of time with the keyway in the pump shaft.

I don't know what happened exactly to be honest. Engine has always started with ease, the pump is perfectly lined with the keyway. The first time it went IN no problems but it was possible the plunger was out of whack so I cranked the engine and no start next time the keyway did not line up for 1/8" so I had to turn the engine by hand to move it that much and make it go IN I put everything back together and still no start.

Now I have no idea why it will no start and I rather not but on of this kits if I don't need it but I can't figure this one out so far.

Btw the kit does say it is for a 5.9l cummins so it should be ok is needed be.

Sounds like the woodruff key wasn't in if when you put it on the second time you had to turn it by hand to line it up. Very likely the key fell out or got smashed. Mine fell out when I did my truck, ran really rough, killed it then wouldn't crank. Put a new woodruff in and runs with no trouble. Other than that maybe the pump is 180 out if it was rebuilt like was already mentioned, but I would definetly check the woodruff key deal out, they are not hard to drop or smash.

The keyway or lock is right there, I can see it. I when I removed the pump it was still there and when I put it back I had to turn the engine but it didn't fell.

I'm hesitant to use ether yet, I rather start the engine with out it.

Thank You for the link to time the IP.

take the pump to a shop and have it timed to #1 tdc and have the pump locked in with the set screw on the pump, then put it in and it should be timed. that is if the gear is still lined up with the cam. im thinkin you moved the pump when you took it off, i read all your other posts and im thinkin this is what you did. make sure you back the set screw off and put the half moon washer in there and tighten the screw. if that doesnt work gut the selonoid or reindex the throttle shaft, and last check and see if you broke the full load lever off, thats all i can think of.

Can't do the shop right now but I did the other stuff You mentioned except for re indexing the throttle shaft, can this cause it not to start? Even with Me pushing the go pedal all the way? I did use ether but it turn a little and then stops.

Well I cranked it some more first with the SF and then after a few minutes with only #2 and it is puffing a little smoke I guess that means it could be getting some fuel now.
