Thermo and why my od is messed

Well I think that my od prob is not my tps but its my thermostat and thats a much cheaper fix! cause the truck never gets warm on the temp gauge it used to now never does and the truck will not shift unless its warm any thoughts on whether this is correct?

I have read that there is a temp switch on the trans that prevents the OD shifting till the trans warms up so it might not be your therm but I think you are on the right track.
The last few days have been cold for us, below freezing by a few degrees, and I have noticed it takes mine 2-3 minutes driving before it will go into OD where normally there is no hesitation,
Del

The thermostat is right where the upper rad hose connects to the engine. Get the thermostat from cummins. I had a Stant in mine before and the temp gauge was all over now with the cummins tstat it is steady.

Also I don't think that is going to fix od. Maybe the sensor is going bad in the trans line.

Seems to me you have to- or it at least makes it easier- to get to the t-stat by pulling the alternator.

I am pretty sure thats it because once the truck is warm which takes forever it does shift but lately it will not get warm hence the tranny sensor will not let me shift into od

The sensor in the trans line is for high temp interruption only. The low temp sensor is an engine coolant temp sensor located on the left side of the head below the air inlet.

Sorry about that I forgot that was how it works. I don't know what I was thinking.

It's possible I suppose but the thermal switch you are talking about it on the trans line towards the front of the motor. The fluid runs through the side of the radiator just like a gasser vehicle where it is cooled. There is also a heat exchange unit tucked up under the exhaust manifold that transfers heat to the fluid to help warm it up when you first start.

My truck won't shift into OD until it's been run for a few minutes but the temp gauge hasn't even come off the cold peg by the time it's working so I'm not convinced you have a t-stat issue. Changing it tho is a cheap option to try!

I tried all the tricks when my OD fried a couple of years back, turned the tps, bypassed the thermal switch etc..... nothing fixed it but a rebuilt transmission.

Well thing is the truck has only been driven a handful of times so the tranny can't be toast cause it worked fine last year could hit 110 np at all

Well I was fiddling with it yesterday and it will shift through all the gears till od which gets me to about 50 miles an hour then it rev real high and will not shift and the truck will not get warm the gauge never moves I ran it for a couple hours and in the past it worked just fine so it has to be my T stat
