Steering w/ lift?
Steering w/ lift?
Hi. I have searched and discovered what i need to know about lifts, but i need to know about the steering situation with a lift installed.
I think i am going to go with a moderate lift from Skyjacker, since they are the only ones that offer a shelf kit for our trucks. My real question is:
Would i need a steering block or a different set-up to lift it 2.5-4"?
I have a '91 AOD that is bone stock & has WORN-out front springs. There is no place where i live that will retemper the springs if i have them rearched, so that isn't an option. If i'm going to have to spend cash for springs, i may as well lift the thing. I use it for my DD, & to tow my Jeep with a very light camper in it to off-roading events. I also installed air bags when i bought it (i owned a VERY heavy old camper then).
Any/all help will be much appreciated. Also, if there's a best Skyjacker kit to lift it, please post up. The rear isn't bad, but has blocks on it. I would prefer to use all springs, but i know nothing about it. Thanks

My cousin bought the skyjacker 4 inch and in his kit it came with a drop pitman arm and a adjustable drag link, i recomend both of these items he went ahead and purchased a steering stabilizer also, his steers really well hardly any slop and he still maintained the full left and right turns
when i bought my kit there was no adjustable drag link or drop pitman arm so i bought the drop and i still need the drag link
like you said it would be best to remove the blocks in the rear and go all springs

I have done the skyjacker 4" springs front and rear. I wasted my money on the drop pitman arm and adjustable drag link. In the end I went with the Off road design cross over steering. Pics in my gallery.

That system from ORD seems to fit quite well. I may have to see what thats worth these days as my Crew Cab is begging for a steering overhaul.
As for the lift... I have a custom set of springs (about 4") and I would not suggest running it without steering correction...ya loose some range and it will bump steer if compressing springs.

I would go with a steering block over the drop pitman arm. If you can get an adjustable drag link, that really helps too. A lot of places don't carry it anymore for our trucks. I went crossover on my 92 and for the most part like it. The only problem is that you have to remove the sway bar to clear it. Without it, there's nothing but the springs to keep the axle centered under the truck. Sitting still, you can move the truck side to side with the steering wheel and not turn the wheels. Mine will death wobble without the steering stabilizers or with wide tires. I've figured out how to build a track bar that should take care of it. Whenever I get it done, I'll post pics.
thats interesting..
Mines never death wobbled once in 120K miles with 38" tires unless the king pins were loose...fix the king pins and it drives perfectly. Have you tore yours apart?

You are correct about the truck swaying with out the sway bar. I'm still trying to figure out how to put a track bar in and make it work correctly. The biggest obstacle to overcome is the mounting of the bar on the passenger side of the axle. the passenger side spring and differential present quite challenge. If you look at the oem setups the differential is on the driver side. Which allows the track bar to be mounted in way that allows it to follow the steering arm. It has to be able to compress the same as the arm or all the work is point less.
I'm interested in your idea and what you may have come up with.
