Question Steering Reservoir Puking Fluid ??

This is not my truck, but a friends, inter-cooled I think, 5-speed.

Just lately, it has started pushing the fluid out the top of the power-steering reservoir.

So long as the engine is running, all is fine; but, as soon as the engine is shut-down, the fluid starts puking out.

Is the problem in the pump or the gear-box ??

What are your thoughts ??

Thanks.

I'm wondering if his system has simply injested some air and he's having trouble getting it all bled out. You know what a bugger these systems are to get the air out.

My method is to fill the reservoir to the top, then start the engine and shut it down right away, then top it up and repeat until the level stays up. Then start the engine, turn the wheel 1/4 turn and shut it off, top it up and repeat that until the level stays up. I keep up that procedure until I can turn the wheel to lock without the fluid level dropping and sucking air.

For the stubborn ones, I've rigged up a contraption that lets me apply a vacuum to the reservoir to evacuate the air from the system. It has worked really well for me, especially on some Ford systems that like to trap the air inside and make lots of noise.

Hope this helps. I may be way off base here, but it's a place to start.

Mine was the gear box. Ebay, $24 box from a 2 wheeler, had to use the arm from mine though. So I ended up cutting the shaft off of mine and driving the chunk of shaft out. To remove the arm from the new box, I cut the arm with a cut off tool in 2 places and it was easily removed. Now in my defense, I tried everything but a gear puller to get all this done. This was my last resort and will forever be my first now!
