starter relay problems

alright well this is my 2nd starter relay in the last 6 monthes on my truck that has gone on me, both the same way, they smoked out. and then i put a new one in and it dont do it if i keep driving it, but as soon as it sits for a length of time it will burn the relay out and wont even crank it over, so what i was thinking was a push start switch like the race cars got, make my truck that more faster ya know, any way do you think you know what my problem could be or if any of you have installed a push start in ur truck?

That will get it done.

A relay is nothing more than an electrically triggered switch; so, if you use 10-AWG wire and a good stout switch, you will actually have a much more reliable system.

Check out what I did to my truck.

I did a write-up on the switch that I installed.
This feels so natural that I hardly ever turn the key past ON; I do it all from the switch.

It works for what I intended plus it has a cool factor, when I shut down and restart in a drive through I now get heads leaning in my window and a "How did you do that"

Jim

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
If a relay burns out it's because excess current is flowing through it. Sthe starter solenoid or wiring inside starter is most likely the cause. Contacts on verge of failing has caused numerous fuses to blow on Start circuit. I hava slso found ANTS inside of relays causing failure.
A bypass start switch is unsafe guys!!!!!!!!!

I ain't meaning to come off as argumentative; but, I dis-agree.

Like I already stated, a relay is nothing more than an electrically triggered switch.

The big current relay is contained in the starter itself and that little Mickey Mouse relay thingie on the left fender that the push-button replaces only makes the circuit that triggers the starter.

Wired sensibly, with good big wire and a good big switch, pushing a button in the cab safely and more dependably performs the same task and takes one more load off of the already overburdened key-switch, fuse-block, and fusible-link.

The service relays perform for most applications is allowing too little wire and too little switch to trigger the relay, instead of switching whatever the relay is switching; a big switch can do that job just as safely and much more dependably.

alright i got it to work, the porblem was the wire to the starter, the smaller one was hitting the starter body by accident and i bent it away and it works, but i put a push start anyway because the relay was burnt out, and also i couldent see it being unsafe either, it does the same task as the relay would do except im doing it insted and also dont semis have the same set up?.

All of the older mechanical ones do.

The later models are not really trucks anymore, column-mounted dimmer-switches, self-cancelling turn-signal switches, automatic transmissions, no wonder they can't keep drivers anymore.
