I myself have not had this problem YET (and hope not to) but from all the posts that I've read it sound's like the gears at the cluster itself went bad. If I remember correctly Crossy went through this not to long ago and found a cheap and easy fix. Do a search and you should be able to find the post about it.

Do you start @ 0 again or can you continue the mileage? I drove my new one home from Florida today and the odometer quit on the way. The speedo works, though.Thanx!

Starts back up where you stopped. You just loose what it never measured.

I went through this exact same problem last year. I pulled my whole pod out and sent it to Southern Electronics in Richmond VA. I don't remember exactly what the cost was, but think it was in the neighborhood of $100-$150. While they had it, they also checked the calibration of the other gages for me. Works perfect, and haven't had any problems with it. Their number: 1-800-446-2880

Archer, if you have a "D"250, you dont have a transfer case!("D"=2wd, "W"=4WD).. But yes, its on the drivers side of the T-case on the 4wheelers and the drivers side of the trans tailshaft on 2WD's..

Ok , then its should be on teh upper drivers side of the T-Case.. easier to get at than on the 2WD!!!
4WD have an additional wirein teh harness that runs up to teh 4WD engaged light and are exposed to more road gunk and crud...really clean it and pack the connectors with dielectric grease..helps keep a good connection there...

Mine has bee stopping and starting for some time now and I was wondering is there a motor inside the cluster? This next week I will be ordering my gears, because I finally have time. For those who have replaced the gears themselves how hard was it, and any tricks?

Just go by the Sticky and it's a piece of cake. Make sure everything is turning before you put it all back together. Odometergears.com has the big gear and backing piece as one unit now.
Good luck.

If the speedo works, then the sending unit, which is the one at the transmission, is working. Either the gears are broken again, or the odometer is simply jammed (perhaps with old grease, etc.), or the stepper motor that drives the odometer has failed.

The sensor on the rear differential is for the ABS system.

Alec, I apparently deleted my post at the same time you were replying. I apologize! I assumed that since it was an old thread no one was looking at it. Lesson learned.
