sloppy Getrag
sloppy Getrag
Hey guys, just picked up a 1st gen and I have some questions. My Getrag was supposedly just rebuilt when the PO had it, it seems fairly quiet and holds the gears well, but the shifter is kinda screwy. Sometimes it hangs up in second, first can be hard to get into, and the shifter has a good bit of slop in it. I pulled the shift lever out of the tranny the other day when I had it stuck in second and the bottom of the lever is sliding out of the shift rail when I go to third. Is there any adjustment under the top plate or can I replace just the top plate internals to fix all this? I think I'm using the right names when I say top plate and shift rails, but this is all new to me so feel free to school on what I'm actually trying to say! Thanks for any help guys!

That seems kind of normal, but if it is just straight up not letting go in second, id say there is a problem. Possibly a shimming issue?
Greg (G1625S) would be the better one to know.
I have 338K on an original, showroom floor tight getrag. It is a pain to get into 1st unless ya double clutch and rev the motor when down shifting. I do hang in second a touch too. Was the spring in the base of the shifter on the tranny?

It lets go of second fine, it just slips the lever past the shift rail. If I keep the shifter pulled towards me a little as I come out of second I could do it with one finger and all is fine, it's just that little bit of slop somewhere that lets it go by without pulling the linkage with it. The spring is there and the c-clip too, so I think the problem is the linkage itself. What about the two bolts on the side of the shifter tower, mine look homemade. Do they fit snug into the little groove on the shifter? Is the actual width of the groove on the shifter pivot ball end the same width of the square end on those two bolts? Does that even make sense!
Check your 1/2 shift fork. My Getrag wouldn't go into first or second at all because the fork slopped around too much on the slider;the 1/2 shift fork had two separate curves in it.
Someday I'll make a drawing that explains all of this.

ahh crap, I hope that's not the problem! I'm gonna have to pull it and check things out I guess
