Shutter...

I searched the old data-base here and did not have much luck finding what I am looking for. My clutch/transmission has been acting strange.

A little history; the truck has never been smooth going in reverse (a pretty dramatic slow shutter as you feather the clutch). The other thing to note that is has done since I bought it is the engage point in the stroke of the pedal has always varied, not a ton but noticably. Both problems are becoming more obvious in the forward gears.

The P/O did his own transmission rebuild and installed a new clutch at the time (about 90k ago). I do not have a ton of faith in anything he did on this truck, I have spent the last 4 years un-doing what he did. I also noticed the clutch pedal has been feeling a bit odd. As you depress and release the pedal the resistance varies at different stages of the stroke.

Any ideas on what this could be?

since it is a hydraulic clutch system, the pressure should be constant on the pedal( wich is actually a hydraulic acutator)... you may have a leak or air bubble in teh fluid line off the clutch resevior.

I have pumped the pedal a bunch like other posts mention with little to no results...

I have noticed people talking about bleeding the slave, would this help? does this explain the shutter. My intuitioin says no, but i never trust that anyway....

for me clutch shudder can be many things and all need to be checked to make sure it leaves you when working on a clutch.
1. oil on clutch face
2. hot spots on flywheel ( overheated clutch will temper spots on flywheel and as it wears the hot spots won't wear and stick up causing uneven surface.)
3. uneven face on flywheel. need to use dial indicater on face of flywheel and turn it to see how much runout (wobble) you have. caused by mating surface not clean (back of flywheel and crank) . bad maching. not torquing bolts in x pattern and not using torq specs.
4. bad pilot bearing or bad front trans bearing.
5. splines on trans iput shaft not allowing clutch disc to slide free. worn splines , twisted splines, crude on splines.
6. bell housing not lining up right. check the hole in bellhousing for being in proper alignment with crank/flywheel with dial indicator.
7. trans to bell housing is clean so it will bolt up square.
8. check all motor / trans/ transfer case rubber mounts .
9. new clutch is junk
not to preach most time if no shudder i just install parts and drive. i got bit on one last fall that didn't shudder when i brought it in but does now. i didn't follow my own rules.
feel free to add if i missed something
