Shudder on take off.

I am starting a new thread on this subject instead of keeping the old one going from 10 months ago. I have not posted in a while. I have not even attempted to remedy the situation with my truck until now.
Here is the deal:
_______________
My truck will shudder on take off from a stop. It happens between 4 mph. and 10 mph. It does not do it at all above this speed. It is really really bad when towing 8,000 pounds. When empty, you can hardly notice it unless you are at full throttle. With very little throttle input through this speed range, it is barely noticeable. I can kinda drive around it most of the time but it is a problem on a steep hill.
Here are my two guesses??

Possible needs a torque converter...
or
Possible needs center bearing in drive shaft...

These are the only two things I can think of............

Universal joints are new. Center bearing is good shape (feels smooth) but the rubber in the mount is questionable to me. Slight slop there. Very slight. Have not checked the pan for friction material. Trans does not slip.

The truck was towing a 20K pound fifth wheel trailer when I bought it. It was also 3 quarts low on fluid when I bought it. Apparently the fellow did not know to check the fluid in N. I think he hurt the trans when all this was going on.

Anyhow, My gut feeling says rebuild the trans and put in a Georend torque converter and see what happens. I tow 4 ton car trailer several times a year. The rest of the time it sits and I drive it to work once a week just to keep it moving.
I don't want to spend the money on the trans if it is still good. I am having a difficult time figuring out where this is coming from. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thank you.

2nd gear band ?...

Drop the pan and adjust all bands and fill with fresh fluid.

I will try the carrier bearing shim and check the pinion angle. I will also service the trans bands and fluid. Hope this will do the trick.

Thanks for the tips.

My truck also does this but it does it from 0mph up to maybe 35mph only when i'm pulling a trailer with a good load, and it also quivers pretty bad when i'm turning, so i thought it was clutches in the rear end, but now i'm feeling somthing new, leaving a stop sign going strait and the thump speeds up with tire speed in a 1 to 1 ratio, could this also be the bands ? ? it's not a tire or brake problem.

its more then likely is your pinion angle I have a Kelderman air ride and if I have the rear up to high I get the shudder if my air is right i dont check your carrier bearing it might need to be shimmed

I shimmed the carrier bearing down 1/2" from it's orig. position and this helped the problem about 50% so I am on the right track. I am glad this problem is not transmission related. I will keep tweaking on the driveshaft and let you know what it takes to make this problem go away. I checked my pinion angle and it checks out ok according to the TSB paperwork. I am going to install a new carrier bearing so the rubber surround bushing is tight again. Hopefully this will eliminate the shudder completely.

Shimmed the carrier bearing down 3/4" from the frame and this cured the problem completely.

Did you check the angles of the drive shaft or just wing it? I think another issue especially in the intercooled 4x4s with the 6" block is axle wrap. Mine does it at times and I'm pretty sure that's the problem because the DS angles are right.

I just winged it. It worked for me.

I think you are right about those long blocks. That has to have a bunch of leverage on the springs.

If your truck is lifted, it's your pinion angle.

Interesting read.

I get a little shudder under heavy acceleration on my lifted crew.
It has a 6 inch lift leaf spring SkyJacker lift with the included angled pinion shims.
I was thinking the 6 inch blocks might be the cause…
Shimming down the carrier bearing is something I will look at as well now.

That is after I get the leaking rear main seal fixed, the new clutch installed, and slide the Getrag / NP-205 combo up in there...

Good to know.

I don't ever recall seeing that service bulletin.

So did you use washers or machine a block or what Roy3?
