Thumbs up Shocks

I was wondering what kind of shocks everybody is using and what they think of them. My shocks have probably been on the truck about 8 years and I want to get some new ones. I have looked into some KYB's and I have heard they do wonders. http://www.kyb.com/products/

Skyjacker has a $35 rebate till the end of the month. Got 4 from topgunz for $135 then minus the rebate for $25 each.

Asking about shocks, it is hard to get a genuine scientific answer.

Most of us will neglect them until the pistons are rattling in the bores and the fluid has been gone for years; then, when we finally do break down and replace them, whichever brand we use makes such a difference that we are really impressed.

There is a lot of truth in that. I would just go with any respectable brand. With such heavy leaf springs and our weight, its hard to notice the effects of a "performance" shock. Piston Diameter will have the greatest noticeability.

This may sound crazy............but my 93' still has the original "Mopar" shocks on them. The shocks are black in color and have the little "chrysler diamond" emblem on them! Anything new will probably amaze me!!! The previous owner (original owner), never put any money into suspension/steering/powertrain anything. The pickup currently has 202K........The front tie-rods are completely shot and the front leaf springs sag.

they do, just not by application. They have some "universal" 5125 series that have the right ends and are very close to the right length.

For the front, if stock use:
BE5-6252-H5,

however I have 2 in springs so I would probably use:

BE5-6253-H5

and for the rear

BE5-6249-H5

some day i'll get a set.

Any good recommendations for factory replacement shocks? I don't haul heavy loads or tow everyday. I occasionally pull a boat or car trailer. I'm looking for the "best bang for the buck" shocks. The pickup is stock suspension. In the past I remember folks talking about Rancho RS9000 being great for the everyday guy.

I have about 130K miles on Bilsteins. I have been feeling lately that they are not performing - a little squirrly on corners. Just this afternoon I found my receipt from Autozone in 2001. I went to the store and told them I thought I needed shocks and wondered if the lifetime warranty would cover them. They said O.K. and ordered four new shocks to be delivered Tuesday - No charge. I was pleasantly surprised - hope this is not too good to be true- I'll let you know.

I know this is an old thread.. But

I have a 1991 2WD ram and it has factory shocks. I only put rear KYB's on it and the change is dramatic. Both KYB and Bilstein's are life-time warrentee (as well as many other brands) to the orginal owner. My first choice would have been Koni's as I've found they tend to have dampening and rebound rates which are sporty yet not overly harsh.
Me like most, only are comparing a worn out shock to new.. really hard to judge which is "best". I saw a vw forum where a guy tested a new factory strut and took it apart and several replacements. And it was the rebound rates which varied so much in the replacements.

RS9000s are about $90 each. If you have a Oreillys autoparts store they usually have shocktober in October. Buy 4 rancho RS9000s and they will give you the in cab adjuster and I think the lines for free. It sounds good but I don't have $400+ to blow on shocks.
