shifting,,,2nd gen to 1st

Hi all: as you can see from my signature[if the mods when thru] we are now a 1st gen owner!the large fifth wheel is no longer a factor so all we need is a heavy duty 3/4 ton to haul camper and thats all this" camper queen "has done most of her life. Now I,ve scanned every post on the 1st gen before I when shopping ,but forget some details and thread names. So bear with me as I ask the same old newbie questions agian. So got the truck yesterday, fuel tank currently has a heavy dose of Howes meaner cleaner working its magic .Crankcase has fresh delo 4oo 15/40 / filter by fleetgaurd .We will be going to rad shop to get it flushed. I'll be changing the rear diff to syn. Ok now the questions...the tranny... it works fine this a 93 build in mexico in oct 92 so does that mean it,s a 508? it also has that super cooler under the box [front corner drivers side] I plan to have the tranny flushed and serviced but was wondering how to check if this cooler is working and how does it work[I'm pleased to see this as in means maybe the tranny has never got hot] I will be putting a gauge on the tranny but it seems to me I read a tread about wiring this cooler up to a in dash switch so it can be turn on prior to a hard climb is this possible or was that on an after market unit. I miss the whistle on the turbo this thing is too tame sounding I had the air ducting off to access oil filter and didn't see a silencer ring this sucks how do I make her sing???.Also where there not some issues about light switches... well this is starting to look like a essay so I'll sign off with a thanks for the replys Eric

No silencer ring on the h1c, sorry. I got a huge increase in turbo sound when I ditched the stock air box for a home made heat shield. Nothing like an hx35 w/o the ring, but it sings pretty good.

The factory cooler is temp controlled, it should keep you cool enough. I'd put a gauge on anyway, never know when that fan motor might die.

2nd gen turbo works well on a 1st gen. That's where mine came from, sings pretty.

The headlight switch is a known weak point. Keep your dash light turned up to help keep the switch cool. The other thing you can do is run the headights off relays, that will make the switch last forever.

Sounds like your on the ball. Don't forget to get the slop out of your throttle cable and make sure everything is getting full travel.

I also have the extra cooler under the bed and hardly ever hear it making noise. Then one day in the woods I heard a strange noise. Got out of the truck while it was running and sure enough, that baby was spinning away. So I know mine works but I truly never hear it at all.

I would check your tranny lines going to that cooler. I don't know if mine are still stock or was replaced at one time before me but they have a 'H' connector about in the middle of the 2 lines. I have noticed off and on that mine leak in that area. I just take them apart and clean them, then good to go for many more miles. Some day, I plan on replacing the complete lines with new ones, maybe braided lines if not too much $$$$$.

Good luck with your 1st gen, you will love it. Get rid of that stock air box and go with a BHAF and it will sing a little more.

Make sure too that the tranny lines are far enough away from the exhaust, when I bought mine, the line was RUBBING on the downpipe . I didn't like that lol. I dunno if they were stock lines or not, they looked as though they may have been replaced by the previous owner, there was some compression fittings on them.
