Like other said it`s prob the pulleys being dirty or glazed. altho what I have found works very well is to touch a tire crayon (grease pencil) to the pulley while running...bear in mind I am a lunatic and am lucky to still have all 11....errr10 of my fingers. works good tho and does not seem to attract dirt & mung like belt dressing does.

Oil on the belt/pully will cause an annoying chirp. Pull the belt off and clean the snot out of the pullys and check the bearings while you are at it. If the belt has oil on it, there ain't much chance of getting it clean enough to quit squeaking. It just became your spare.

Well, I am not going to disable my A/C system - I need it. Too **** hot in OK in the summer to go without it. So what I need is a new A/C compressor? Is it worth trying to rebuild the darn clutch in the thing?

I suppose I could put a non A/C belt on for winter, and deal with it in the summer. While I have the R12 system cracked then I may as well replace all the hoses and stuff in that system... that'll be another nice, fun $1K project.

Before you unhook anything try a new belt. I know you tried it already, but try a new belt again and as said above clean the pulleys good. By putting on a non ac belt they may have corrected the problem by it being a new belt. My 89 squeaked bad. The belt looked good but was glazed. I wire brushed it and it helped but I put a new belt on and now is been ok for a couple of years. When my 2005 gasser chevy was new the belt started squeaking after I went through a big (real big) puddle. It has chirped since. ( don't care, its a chevy ).

Maybe a new belt will stop the chirping for him. My problem was definately the AC clutch. When I took the belt off and spun it by hand it you could tell the bearings were gone. It squeeled constantly the day I swapped belts. Before that it was the rythmic chirp he described. Disabling the the AC was a quick fix till later.
