Sbec

I think my SBEC is toast.
Lost grid heaters last week and then went out on the highway and had no OD. Tried my cruise an it's gone.
So, is there anyway to check to see if it's the SBEC or something else? Could it be a ground wire? Or a live wire? The manual is kinda vauge when it comes to this.
It started this last week when it was -40 C. I thought maybe something was frozen, but all three at once is too weird.
Where do you hook up the DRB II? Can you? Or is this something only the dealer has?
Where do I get a replacement if I do have to replace? Do auto parts stores have them or dealer or scrapyard?
Could you bypass the SBEC?
Thanks for looking.

I take it the speedo works? Does the charging system work?

First thing to do is see if it has power, there's a link in the sticky on what to check.

There's a plug by the driver's side hood hinge for a scanner. I have an old Auto X-Ray scanner I picked up cheap that will talk to mine and get trouble codes and capture operating data.

Most auto parts stores can get you one (reconditioned). Chances of finding one in a junkyard are very small.

You could bypass it, but you'd have to add a few mystery switches.

Ew, I see you have a '91. It's intercooled I presume?

edit: Duh, you mentioned OD. Of couse it's intercooled and of course the battery is charging.

I don't have wiring info for the 91.5's, so I don't know if they use the same wires for power and ground as a '92 and up. Good luck.

I LOVE mystery switches!!!!!!!!

Check your main grounds off the battery. I was having all sorts of electrical problems, and when i replaced my stock, original cables with new 2/0 homemade ones, all my problems were solved.

Yes mine is a 91.5. I have the wiring diagrams, just wondering if probing around the SBEC is tolerated.
The charging system is seperate on this year model, as far as I can tell. I have an external regulator and the manual says it controls the grid heaters, the OD and the cruise.
I could scan and post the diagrams if anyone needs them.
Edit. I see the diagrams are there.
Also the numbers you litsed in the sticky are the same ones as listed in my manual.
Thanks for your help and time.

Is the SBEC dealer only or can i get it somewhere else?
Part number would be nice if someone knows it.
BTW, I'm in Canada if you tell me where to get it. I might not have that store here.
Thanks for looking.
