Thats what I did. Have been pullin cars around the last couple days, 3500, 3800+1800 pound trailer. Havent seen temps over 1200, unless I want to. (mountainous terrain) Beauty of the 12cm ported is it still has the wastegate to keep from overspoolin with too much fuel. Going from a 21 to a 12 on a 5 speed will be like night and day. The 12s are nice if you dont have the 3200 spring because of the faster spooling.

16cm non-wastegated housing is $165 plus shipping and is bolt on install. I can afford that now and upgrade later on when/if the economy improves and my income goes back to normal. It's gotta be better than what I have on there now...

How much would I be looking at to get the 12cm wastegated turbo and everything that goes with it ?

about $200

i would get a 16cm because if you add any fuel with a 12cm housing on an H1C you need to have a MWE slot or it will surge really bad. even with a MWE slot you can still get surge if you drop to lower rpms

Always something to learn on here. Tell me more about your experience with this "MWE."

on my truck running closer to stock fuel on a compressuor housing just like yours and a 14cm non wastegated i had really bad surge at mid throttle so i upgraded to the 60mm compressor which has the wme slot.
the wme slot is saposed to bleed off excess pressure at the compressor wheel tips,
now if you could find a whole hx35 it would have the 12cm w/g housing and a mwe slot in the compressor.

i went from a 18cm to a 16cm and gained a lot of response and about 6psi of boost then went from the 16cm to a 14cm and gained a lot of spool up and a lot of boost went from 30psi to 40psi and hot, no wastegate, then i got the 12cmw/g which gave me more spool up but surge so i replaced the compressor with the 60mm and got rid of the surge.

Sounds expensive to still have a H1C

I just sent away for the 16" housing. $165, and I can always sell it on down the line to another new owner of a 92 as broke as myself, that is, if I feel the engine warrants a better turbo.

Hell, I just got the thing. Replaced extremely leaky valve cover gaskets, now I have to figure out the best way to get all the oil that dripped down the sides off and see if there are any leaks actually coming off the head gasket before I proceed any further.

Horse before the wagon and all that.

I figured it took you a little while to do all that. Just glad you did it so I can just save up for a real good one right away. What did you do with all the "old" parts anyways?

So is there a good write up somewhere on the nuts and bolts of swapping the housing out ? Or is it really really simple, no tricks to it. I guessing really really simple.

I started soaking the nuts that connect the turbo to various stuff with WD40 this morning, probably gonna hit it again this evening. If I'm lucky that housing will get here before the weekend, as PDR is only a day's drive up I-5 from me right outside of Vancouver, BC. If the massive parking lot known as Seattle wasn't in the way, it'd be a 5 hour drive.

Thanks again for the replies, all.

Maybe sometime down the line I'll slap a stronger turbo on there. I have a feeling that the 16 sq cm housing will be an improvement over the stock "Lagmaster" one...

The only thing you need to know is to make sure when you start hammering the old housing off, is to make sure it comes off straight so you don't mess up the exhaust wheel. They sometimes require a big hammer to get off. don't be afraid to hit it. I soaked mine with PB Blast for awhile before i started on it.

Oh, and two of the strap bolts will not come all the way out untill you start to separate the housing from the turbo.( the turbo is in the way)

Man...I must be oblivious to the 21cm housing... I have it on my truck and it rips pretty good with not that much extra fuel...Just yet... It must really make a huge difference though, everybody is always baggin on the 21..lol I have a buddy that is gonna give me his stock turbo off his 95 to try for awhile.. I know it isn't much of an improvement over stock, but I think it has a smaller housing.. Should spool quicker I'd think..

You'll definatley notice a huge improvement. With my stock 21, you could barely hear the turbo..now it's there all the time..much better low and mid power. Spools almost instantly.
