Rear Wheel Seal
Rear Wheel Seal
My neighbor has a 92' D-250. He has just replaced the rear brakes and seals. The problem is he can't get them to seal. He has tried 2 different seals and they both are leaking. So he wanted me to ask if there is a special way to put them in or is he having dumb luck? When you put them in the hub, do you drive them in as far as they will go or what? Any info would be appreciated as I will pass it along to him. Bill
Re:Rear Wheel Seal
Need more info like- was the axle stub scarred badly where seal rides, yes the seals are to bottom out in the hub, how are the seals been driven into the hub, have the retention springs in the seal popped out, did he put a little grease in the seal lip for instant lubrication. The seal should be test fit on the axle stub before installing in the hub with the persistant leakage first, if there is NOT a good snug fit or a groove in the axle stub a "speedy sleeve" may be needed to be installed on the axle stub for the seal to ride on. Seals should never be put in with chisels, punches or hammer heads, use an old bearing race from that side of the hub but grind the outside first so it slides in and out of original machined area easily. To start the seal place a 2x4 that is short enough to fit inside drum and lay on seal level and flat, use/buy 3lb hand sledge and hit "square" in the middle of 2x4. Once seal is flush with hub place old revised race face out like normal and tap in to place evenly until seal bottoms out on machined lip. This is tried and true backyard method of seal installation without bending, used the actual outer bearing to install speedy sleeve on axle stub if needed. Hopefully this will help solve problem. PK
