Rear main seal question.

Ok, so i have the trans out now and it's pretty easy to tell that the rear main seal is pressed into the Aluminum adapter plate (as we call it) that bolts to the back of the engine block. the starter mounts to it and such. since the seal is inside the alum. plate that means that oil is in that area between the alum. plate & the block. That would also mean that there should be some sort of gasket between the block & plate ???? so if you have an oil leak that is bad isn't it also possible that it COULD be leaking from that gasket also?

I guess I need to remove the adapter plate and see what going on there since it appears that this truck had simalar work done to it already.

thanx, crossy

If you pull the block adapter, you will see the seal carrier. If it is a 3rd Gen there is an o-ring for the cam, older motors have a steel plug to seal the cam. That's pretty much it, to be leaking oil back there. Oh, I guess there is an oil galley plug too.

remove starter and take off the adapter plate, it will all make sense then. most likely rear main or cam plug.

the seal doesn't fit into the adapter plate, if you take the adapter plate off you'll see the seal carrier they are talking about, it's a small aluminum plate as well, think small adapter plate lol

OK - I found out there is a seal housing behind the adapter. it looks like it's part of it when it's together. the seal that was in there came out in 4-5 pieces.
I won't have to go to all the extra work just to SEE it next time. thanx, crossy
