My axles are held in with bolts. I have Dana 60 axles and the FSM says Bolts are correct.

The FSM also says that that the 70 series axles came with studs, cone washers and nuts. They call the cone washers "tapered dowels" and yes you have to "strike" the axle to remove it.

The studs are for the guys who have 70 series axles...

I'm not a fan of studs, myself. I only like women But being married for 20+ years, I may as well be a unic.

Do you have to keep the cover that goes between the hub and the drum? Cause I found out that the last owner messed it up and it won't fit back in there. PLEASE HELP!!!

At the top of the first gen forum index is a button labeled "New Thread". You click it and it makes a new thread.

I believe that part keeps leaking rear end oil from getting into the brakes, IIRC. They may still be available or try PMing simplysmn on this forum, he may have one...Mark

That cone, although not mandatory, is exactly what Mark states here. It re-directs the gear oil away from the brake shoes (in a seal failure) and pushes the gear oil outside the drum between the flange where the bolts hold the wheel on (hub) and the drum. If you remove it, you remove the protection it provides.

Clean it up as nicely as possible, and reinstall it. It will still work.

The very last post of the thread shows what you have in your hand.

Top of the forum there is a stuck thread..."Look here first!!! A.K.A The Sticky" all the information you seem is in there.

Here is a link to Jim's thread...
