My axles are held in with bolts. I have Dana 60 axles and the FSM says Bolts are correct.
The FSM also says that that the 70 series axles came with studs, cone washers and nuts. They call the cone washers "tapered dowels" and yes you have to "strike" the axle to remove it.
The studs are for the guys who have 70 series axles...
I'm not a fan of studs, myself. I only like women
But being married for 20+ years, I may as well be a unic.

I believe that part keeps leaking rear end oil from getting into the brakes, IIRC. They may still be available or try PMing simplysmn on this forum, he may have one...Mark

Clean it up as nicely as possible, and reinstall it. It will still work.
