rear diff getting hot!!!!

the rear end in my truck started making a noise and getting hot i tore it apart thinking it was a pinion bearing they looked fine took turns out the roll pin sheared off and let the cross pin spin in the case and chewed it up a litle well i replaced the roll pin and had the cross pin tac welded into place now its still getting real hot i drove it about 10 miles then checked it and its so hot you cant hardly hold your hand to it
any help will be appreciated
thanks guys

Check the clearance / wear pattern between the R&P if you haven't done so already. This is an "open" diff, right ? Roll pin, cross pin, I assume is an open diff.

yes it is open and the rear end does have a little slack in it but never had this problem till the other day,,,but it seems like the pinion bearing next to the yoke is where the heat is coming from,,,can the bearing wear down and start heating up...

If you set the preload too high, they'll heat up, then spall, then lock up. It's really fun when it happens at road speed.

thanks j martin i had the rear out a while back maybe i lost a shim? i took the pinion out and layed it with other parts and when i put it back i found a smaller washer but it wasnt the same height as the shims ,,when i put it back it went 2 shims on the pinion after it was in the housing then the bearing then the thrust washer seal then yoke and washer and nut i thought the smaller may have been for another pinion nut but could it have went with the shims?thanks for the help guys
