rear axle seal

I lost the seal in the front of the axle where the driveshaft is, anyone know how much of a pain this is to replace?

If you have the right tools it is quite easy. I believe the nut is 1 5/16". It is easy to get off with an impact, but not so easy with a ratchet. If your using a ratchet have someone hold the brake real tight while you put a lot of umph on the ratchet. after you get the nut off, pry the seal out with a large screw driver. clean the hole up and apply a light coat of silicone to the outside of the seal and tap it back in. It is best to use a driver of some kind that is the same size as the outside diameter as the seal is so as to not damage the seal. apply a little grease to the seal surface and slide the yoke back on and tighten the heck out of the nut. While the yoke is out, check to see if you have a groove worn in the surface where the seal rides. if it is real bad you might want to put in a new yoke, or put a speedy sleeve on it.

The torque for the nut on the yoke is 300 ft-lbs. So ya, tighten the heck out of it! You should really replace the nut while you are at it if you can. They sometimes dont lock as well after they are used once.

To remove the DS you just take the straps off the yoke.
