Well I just got it apart. Look at the pics and number 3 has vertical scaring. It sure whether to put it back together or just ship it home. Kinda leaning towards fixing it for now and then really tear into it when I get home

Also. Are head studs reusable. The reason I ask is because if I decided to put it back together just to get it home I would go ahead and do studs now so that it's already done when I have time to pull the motor and get it to the machine shop

I also noticed that the number 3 cylinder has a lot of carbon build up and I think that is what scared the cylinder wall. The injector for that cylinder is either melted or has a large carbon build up

How far is home, Dan? Are you going tow it home, on trailer with your 93, or were you planning on driving that 90 home?

Gonna pull the camper home with the 93. It's about 5 hours to the house. Thought I might get a buddy to drive the 90 back for me so it wouldn't have a load on it. I'm sure it would make it but I don't want to ruin the block.

I would absolutely NOT hone the cylinder without pulling the piston and the other stuff when doing a ring job. I know on gasoline engines it's possible to ream out the top ridge, hone the cylinders and knurl the piston skirts when re-ringing to get a few more miles out of a engine before a major overhaul but I can't speak as the the advisability of doing that on a Cummins diesel. The diesel is dealing with much greater pressures than an old non-turbo gasser.

If you honed the cylinder with the old piston and rings installed the grit will come off the hone and be impossible to get out of the rings which will just ruin the hone job you just did in addition to those abrasive particles going elsewhere in the engine. A definite BAD IDEA.

BTW, did you do a compression check before you pulled the head?

No I didn't do a compression test. I'm sure number 3 was shot. Just by looking at the head and cylinder and injector. I think to get it home is a head gasket. Then Deal with it. Maybe I'm wrong. It won't be pulling nothing but it's self.
