question about swapping axles

I have a 1993 2wd dually with very slow gears in the rear.
I want to swap to like a 3.07.
I found a single tire rear end, can I still use duals? Has anyone done this?
Thanks,
Wil

dually rears are a different width, you'd need spacers to run your dual wheels w/ a srw rear diff.

have a auto with short tires.
my thought was to go with shorter tires and faster rear.
now I am screaming to go 65
I do not know what the gear ratio is for sure now, as the tag is gone. I do know the fellow that ordered this truck had it for pulling a 50 ft trailer and he liked to go about 57mph.
I do not pull a trailer and want to go 70mph and keep my rpm down to get some mileage.

yeah, you can get spacers easy enough, a couple hundred dollars. it's just a matter of how much you want to spend and how comfortable you feel running spacers. Me personally I'd find a dually rear end, or if that rear is cheap enough buy it just for the r&p and swap the gears into your housing. i wouldn't plan on towing w/ spacers, not saying it hasn't been done plenty, i just wouldn't do it personally

My 2cents
James

ps. not trying to be smart, but make sure that you're OD is engaged so that you go into OD as well...just covering all the bases, bc w/ 4.10s and an auto you shouldn't really be "screaming to do 65"

I've dualled the single rears. It will be a little narrower, but not all that much. it's the same as cab and chassis. But the easiest would be to change the gear sets. But personally I wouldn't go taller than 3:55's if you are gonna tow at all.

I would think you could tow the Titanic with 4:10s.
What was the speed limit in 1993.
I can't remember when 55 MPH was the limit all over the USA
Picked up 12 MPH when I went form 4:10s To 3:54s
I think the truck would only go 74 MPH nailed to the carpet with 4:10s and would pull anything.
Going 55 mad me go nuts.
I have a 5 speed.

3.07 rear

I found out the hard way that a 3.07 gear set will only fit a rear specifically designed for it as the off set is different by a 1/8 inch in the actual rear end casting .you cannot tell by eye as we tried a number of times and ways to make it fit it does not went with a 3.54 set up good in town and on highway.

I'll just have to disagree. I had 4.10's and a manual and it does indeed beg for another gear above 60 mph. 3.07's in, and top gear is a serious mile-eater at 75 mph. Still only use first for dog-paddling around. If I have to tow, I'll just use the bottom 5 instead of the top 5...

With an auto, and its torque converter slip top gear is pretty much the same as a manual. You can put 3.54 in the 4.10 housing, but not 3.07; that took a special housing as mentioned before. 3.07 and a 727 is about equal to a 518 and 4.10 in top gear...I feel your pain.
cheers,
Douglas

I have a five speed and a manual, with 285 tires. I was convoying home last night with friends, went to combine demo derby, I called my buddy in front. And i says, hey, how fast are we going. My speedo doesn't work, he says were doing 64. I said DANG!!! It feels like ol white lightning is doing a 100 mph. I think i need some of those 37 military tires!

good to know, thanks for the info. figured you might have to change the carrier but wouldn't think the whole housing would be different

The carrier is the same between 3:54's/ 4:10's and 3:07's. The axle housing is the difference. All 3:07 axles I have seen are also 35 spline axles with wedge locks on the axles ends.
