Pump mods
Pump mods
I have been playin with the idea of boostin the power on my stock 92 for a while now. Towin a fifth wheel has almost convinsed me to go with it. I am concerned about the life of the pump and possible damage. I guess I would have to go with gauges hugh?

For those of you that have turned up the pump on this truck does the pump take the pressure? Will I have to replace it later. Will the trans take the extra hp? How will this effect my milage?

Over all is this a good idea or bad?
Re:Pump mods
Well you have some good questions and some valid concerns.

I know this is a broken record, but, Install some gauges before you start tweaking.. Its hard to know where you're goin if you don't know your starting point.

The extra power is nice. I hauled an 8000# 27ft trailer with all my home belongings in it and having not to shift on most hills was nice, kept up to traffic and ahead of most of the stocker guys.

The wear on the tranny is my biggest concern so far as the extra power has made it start to growl a bit more at highway speed even under no load. As for pump wear I use Lubtech additive in my fuel to get my mileage and antiwear properties and I know that the higher fuel rates through the stock injectors is trouble. I am saving some sheckles for that.

Mileage? No real change, at least on the highway. Before and after the tweaks I had no change. In town, well thats another story..LOL..

Another thing to do is before you tweak, have a tune up on the ol Cummins. Get the timing checked, valves set etc. to get it into top shape before you start moving the settings.

J-eh

Re:Pump mods
J-eh

I want to get the autometer gauges also. I have the diesel tac and want to get the pyro and boost to match as close as possible. You got a piller mount? Where? Did you get the 60 lb boost gauge or the 35? Did you mount the pyro pre turbo? How did you insure that the shaveings from drilling and tapping didn't go into the turbo?

A lot of questions but I need to know before I start. Where did you get the gauges?

Thanks for the help

Re:Pump mods
Well the gauges came from a buddy of mine who's into drag racing and sells parts on the side. The A-pillar mount is OK but not as nice as the 2nd gen setups. The gauge angle is a little high but my seats are puffed up high, so it kinda works.

I have the 35psi boost gauge. I really don't think I will ever get to or over that amount of boost with my future plans. Typically with most non $$$$K mods, you won't get more than about 35 psi anyway..

I have the pyro pre-turbo. Drilled and tapped with the turbo on, no problem with chips.. I used the Nickel Never-Sieze on the bit and tap during the operation and made sure that I caught most of it.. Then used a very small magnet to get the remainder of the dust out. You can magnetize a small screwdriver to do that as well.

If you want to get Autometer, I am unsure of who is a good dealer in your area. Sorry.. :-[

I have an attached photo of the pyro install...

J-eh
Re:Pump mods
J-eh

Hey thanks for the info and the pict. I think I am gonna try to get the turbo off but if it gives me any static I'll drill it with it on. How do you like the autometer guages? The tac is great just wonderin about the boost and pyro.

Maybe you can be a bench mark for me when I get the gauges in? I sure would like to compare with the same setup.
Re:Pump mods
Thumbs,

Don't sweat it... do the drilling with the turbo on the truck...
You really can't hurt anything, honest..
Grease up your drill bit, pull and clean 2-3 times as you drill... then as Lil Dog said, use a magnet for the rare little filings that may have dropped in. After that, use the same method for the tapping... grease it up, pull and clean, grease it up...
One thing you want to do is make sure that you try the probe in the hole a couple times as you tap. You don't want more than about 1/4" to 3/8" of the probe tip to protrude inside.
Piece of cake.... trust us on this one... no extra work needed on this job.
I've done several, including my own manifold with 2 holes so I can do some drive pressure testing and not a single problem.

Bob.
Re:Pump mods
The only reason I used the Anti-seize stuff is cuz my truck was still warm when I did it.. The grease just rolled off the bit after I started so I moved to the Anti-seize and it worked much better.

The depth is important for the compression fitting for the pyro probe. You don't want the fitting to protrude into the manifold to cause turbulance. As the thread is Pipe thread (1/8 NPT) the more you tap the deeper the fitting threads in. I measured the thickness of the manifold and made a mark on the probe fitting. Tapped a little in the hole, tested the fitting, tapped some more etc untill I got the right depth.

The instructions from the TST website were bang on, only I should have tapped the front of the manifold as those cylinders (typically #1) run hotter than the rest.

J-eh
